I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.
Get out the popcorn for this one.
QuoteFlorida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.

I am not knocking Biden here. He is infinitely more competent than any Republican that would be running. However, it's the duty of the party to prepare new leaders for the future and the future is here. They need to be promoting their younger talents. I delete a dozen email from the Dems every day and yet, no one is talking about who these people are. I actually believe that Biden will squeak through since the opposition is so impaired and people are exhausted with Trump and DeSantis.

SCOTUS rules against Trump-backed election theory in key voting rights case in N,C,
QuoteThe Supreme Court said Tuesday that the North Carolina Supreme Court did not violate the elections clause of the US Constitution when it invalidated the state's 2022 congressional map, rejecting a broad version of a controversial legal Independent State Legislature theory pushed by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the 6-3 opinion.
The case had captured the nation's attention because Republican lawmakers in North Carolina were asking the justices to adopt a long-dormant legal theory and hold that state courts and other state entities have a limited role in reviewing election rules established by state legislatures when it comes to federal elections.
"State courts retain the authority to apply state constitutional restraints when legislatures act under the power conferred upon them by the Elections Clause,” Roberts wrote.

Supreme Court clears way for redrawing of Louisiana congressional map
QuoteWashington — The Supreme Court on Monday tossed out a bid by Louisiana Republicans seeking to reverse a lower court ruling that ordered it to redraw its congressional map, paving the way for new voting lines to be drawn to include a second majority-Black congressional district before the 2024 election....
Abha Khanna, a lawyer for one group of plaintiffs, said the Supreme Court's move in the Louisiana dispute affirmed the Voting Rights Act's power in preventing racially discriminatory redistricting.
"Black voters in Louisiana have suffered one election under a congressional map that unlawfully dilutes their political influence," she said in a statement. "Thankfully, Louisiana is now on track to add an additional minority opportunity district in time for 2024, ensuring that Black Louisianians are finally afforded fair representation in the state's congressional delegation."...

2022: Pennsylvania Supreme Court takes control of redrawing state's congressional map
Quote
The state Supreme Court is no stranger to the redistricting process. In 2018, it threw out the congressional map and redrew it after it was challenged as unfairly benefiting Republicans. In response, several GOP lawmakers unsuccessfully called for Democrats on the bench to be impeached....
The GOP has also advanced a constitutional amendment that would give the legislature the power to draw districts for statewide appellate court races — those for Commonwealth, Superior, and Supreme Courts — instead of the current format of statewide races. Such a change would make the state a national outlier, a Spotlight PA review found.
Typically, the congressional map is drawn and approved through a process akin to passing legislation through the General Assembly. After the state House and Senate agree on a map, it then goes to the governor for his approval.

We're both right. I'm a firm believer in the principle that the first duty of a leader is to train her replacement.
However, I think it would be a mistake to discount the value of Biden's multiple decades of experience in both domestic legislative processes and in foreign relations. I'd hate to see us waste yet more time re-inventing the wheel.

While you might disagree with DeSantis on everything, I'm not sure how you could argue that he is incompetent. Biden certainly isn't infinitely more competent. If nothing else, look at his re election results and contrast that to Biden's approval ratings.
I agree people are exhausted by Trump. Biden would likely beat him.
Most of the population is just learning about or don't even know DeSantis. No one is going to care about his squabble with Disney. He'll be able to articulate what the so-called "don't say gay" law is vs what dems and the liberal press will continue to try and make it be.
You mentioned the Democrats should be promoting their younger talents. That's exactly what DeSantis is, for the Republicans.

It's pretty bold to claim that no one will care about an authoritarian trying to bend a corporation to government will. I'll be interested in hearing him articulate his anti-gay agenda for the entire country. Hopefully he will be more successful than he was articulating what he means by "woke" ideology and why it should die in Florida.

Never in my 50 years of voting has a former President continue to say FOR THREE YEARS the vote was rigged, HE WON the reelection vote, and not acknowledge THEY LOST 60 court rulings that election WAS NOT RIGGED in 2020. Add in that major Republican cable networks/websites/streaming services continue to endorse + promulgate his views and spin that Biden is a terrible President daily in their broadcasts ---- so no wonder Biden has difficulty getting higher approval numbers.

2020 Election Litigation: The Courts Held
QuoteDespite their different backgrounds, judges came to the same conclusions and rejected the Trump campaign's allegations. Across more than 60 cases in 12 states, judges found that the challenges to the election outcome came up short. (A database of election cases is available at Democracy Docket, www.democracydocket.com.)
The resoluteness of the judiciary in this time of turmoil provided inspiration and calm to the country. While the guardrails of democracy generally may need our attention and shoring up, the judiciary rose to the occasion without missing a step. In celebration and remembrance of this great service, we have here collected a sample of some of the cases and decisions following the election.
Many nurses are unaware that there is a current $250,000 reward offered by FBI for Yevgeniy Prigozhin for his interference by Russians in 2016 elections. Trump later called on Russia to find Hillary's emails....
QuotePrigozhin was the primary funder of the St. Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency (IRA). He allegedly oversaw and approved their political and electoral interference operations in the United States which included the purchase of American computer server space, the creation of hundreds of fictitious online personas, and the use of stolen identities of persons from the United States. These actions were allegedly taken to reach significant numbers of Americans for the purposes of interfering with the United States political system, including the 2016 Presidential Election.
This Prigozhin poster is making the rounds again today on Twitter/internet. With all the turmoil in Russia now, will be interesting if Prigozhin survives or gets turned over to FBI and if Putin remains in power with Russians again interfering in U.S. 2024 elections.

We've known for quite some time that if you repeat a distorted truth or untruth often enough that millions of people will simply believe that it's true. The GOP has embraced this and the media, unwisely, plays along.

Whoever, don't allow this cynical amoral man become president. Did I mention also that he's an idiot. Cunning, but not much more there to look at.
I agree with Beerman that perhaps outside of Florida people are just getting to know DeSantis. They aren't necessarily liking what they see. His poll numbers have tanked after his announcement. Prior to that everyone was thinking he had the Golden Ticket.
I think one reason is right before he announced, he finished a legislative session where his conservative agenda was passed with much bad publicity elsewhere. He's capturing voters that are to the right of Trump and that's not a lot. He's a bit too far to the right for a lot of voters and even though young republicans here in Florida endorse him, I'm not sure his conservative agenda is popular with young republicans elsewhere.
As expected indictments only make Trump more popular and stronger.
QuoteDespite making substantial gains in the polls since last Summer, at one point pulling within 13 points of Trump, DeSantis' popularity among GOP voters has slumped while Trump is surging.

I was speaking more about my area, which has gone from a more moderate/independent vibe to more progressive. And, with it crime and homelessness has gotten worse, rapidly. We have homeless encampments that we never had, one of the nation's highest rate of car thefts, etc.
Other places I've frequented in my life I've seen get worse. LA and San Francisco, for example. I hear what you're saying about areas like those that haven't flipped. But, while maybe they haven't flipped, those being elected have gotten more progressive. San Francisco's elected DA a few years ago comes to mind, who announced he wasn't going to prosecute certain crimes.
All that being said, there are a lot of variables. So, I acknowledge it may be not so cut and dry that you can simply blame or give credit to one party.
I think I've mentioned your area before. Tampa/St Pete is clean, homelessness and crime seems to be under control, easy to get around, good economy. It's pretty much a Dem run area, and a favorite place of mine.
