The election 2024 Thread

Published

I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.

Get out the popcorn for this one.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.

How does one characterize the voter who supports this mess:

You would think the Special Prosecutor would want to maintain some sort of perception of being professional and unbiased.  I guess not.

As to your question, people here have been making general characterizations of Trump voters for quite sometime.  I'm sure you're making their day by giving them another opportunity.

What exactly so outrageous about Trump is saying in this clip?

Gullible?

Angry?

Victim?

Intentional?

I think that there are a variety of ways we could characterize people who support Trump, even when they know who he is.  In 2016 there was the possibility that conservative voters didn't  quite know who it what Trump represented, now everyone knows.

This is a parody account. I thought that was obvious but apparently I was wrong.

The man is incoherent, and yet he is the presumptive nominee for president of a major political party. The question before the Supreme Court is not if this man is guilty, they are being asked about presidential immunity. Something very similar happened during the case of Nixon v. Fitzgerald.

I think some Trump supporters never actually hear him speak. They see photos, heavily edited videos and interviews. They still think he is the host of the Apprentice, which I've read, was also heavily edited. Or perhaps they are so caught up in the cult, it doesn't matter what he says. I think it does matter.

I agree that some Trump supporters don't actually listen to Trump's speeches.  I agree that they depend upon media voices to tell them what Trump said and what he meant.  This is a very dangerous time for our country.

The #AbandonBiden campaign officially began earlier in December, led by Muslim leaders in swing states like Michigan, Minnesota and Arizona, who disapproved of Biden's support for Israel's counterattacks against Hamas. The counterattacks have come at the cost of tens of thousands of innocent Palestinian lives.

Now, the coalition intends to expand the pressure campaign to all 50 states.

"We will save America from itself, by punishing Biden at the ballot box,” said lead organizer Jaylani Hussein in a statement.

The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The coalition plans to endorse an independent presidential candidate, Hussein told CNBC. He added that the campaign does not support former President Donald Trump, the current Republican frontrunner, though it is aware of the risks of depleting Biden's voter base.

"There is a likelihood that our votes may weaken the Democrats that the Republicans may win,” Hussein said. "We're not fools about that.”

I can understand wanting to punish Biden.  But they also understand that a Republican may get in if he looses swing states.  They made no mention that Republicans are more supportive of Israel and while Republicans are enjoying Biden's decline on this issue aren't calling for a cease fire either.  They don't object to funding but want to tie funding to their agenda on the border for example.

I guess their conscious will be clear if they vote for someone that wants a cease fire, even though they know Biden nor Republicans either of whom are likely to win the election won't call for a cease fire....yet.  There is time for Biden and Republicans to come around.

Former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn announces bid for Congress

Quote

Despite the trauma, Dunn, a 15-year veteran of the force, continued to work as a Capitol Police officer until he stepped down several weeks ago. He says part of the reason he's running is because former President Donald Trump could be reelected.

"I believe that as a Capitol Police Officer, I've exhausted everything that I could do in that role, in that capacity to fight, for accountability, to fight for justice, to preserve our democracy, to fight for a democracy,” Dunn said.

Dunn has also blamed Trump for the Capitol insurrection.

"I wanna do everything in my power that I can do to fight back against him,” Dunn said. "As a congressman, that gives me a seat at the table now to hold him accountable.”

After listening to Harry Dunn speak past 2 years during internet interviews, his Jan. 6th testimony and reading his book, think he would be good as a Maryland Representative since great public servant as Capital policeman.

Surely you jest.  Just for starters, he's claiming presidential immunity

Surely you jest.  He can't even speak in a coherent sentence.  He's busy waving those little hands to create distraction from the fact that he doesn't have any idea what he's speaking about.  If a person running for president who could be convicted of a criminal charge, wouldn't you want this settled before an election?  He will win with SCOTUS. Almost every judge there was bought and paid for by the Federalist.   Society.  Even Trump's stupidest lawyer said, out loud and in public,  that Kavenaugh would take care of this for him.  Tit for tat, transactional, corrupt.  If he were an intelligent and rational person, he would explain why he is innocent.

The incumbent president made a campaign speech yesterday.  It was pretty good.

I'll have to take your word for it.  This must have been weeks ago.  I have no idea what clip this was.

A top Republican official in Missouri is threatening to remove President Joe Biden from appearing on the ballot as retaliation for the determination in two other states that Donald Trump doesn't qualify because he "engaged in insurrection."

Retaliation is always an admirable political agenda, right?

Quote

Asked how he would disqualify Biden from the ballot for insurrection, Ashcroft said that he's "let an invasion unstopped into our country from the border." Vice President Kamala Harris, he added, "supported people that were rebelling against the U.S. government during the riots in 2020," referring to racial justice protests in the wake of George Floyd's murder.

"If this is the standard, does that suddenly mean she's not allowed to run? None of us can say, because there is no standard," he said.

In right wing political rhetoric protesting against police brutality is now the same as insurrection.  Good to know.  This reflects what I didn't want to believe was true, that educated adults who identify as conservative actually don't know what the term "insurrection" means in the era of Trump.

My mistake.  For some reason they really disagree with the common definitions and prefer to create chaos around that meaning.

Biden spoke about a poison in America in this speech.  Unlike his GOP opponent, Biden wasn't referring to immigrants and refugees at our southern border, he was talking about white supremacy.

Biden has definitely hired much better speech writers than Trump and his delivery of remarks isn't too bad for an old guy. IMV
