The Bad Day Thread

Published

Aw. So, I'm already having a bad day.

One of my students, the one that tells people I'm her mom because she really doesn't have anyone else to call mom, just came to say goodbye.

Moving in with her real mom, who is trying like hell to make things right with her daughter.

She'd better.

I corrected the kid when she called me mom, btw. She was just in my office every.single.day. and I care about her.

Happy the kid is hopefully getting a fresh start. Sad for me.

We've had a pretty awful week over here. One of the seventh grade teachers just passed away from a sudden illness (infective endocarditis, strokes, sepsis). He was only 47. I keep expecting to see his smiling face in the office. Since I go between schools, I wasn't super close to him, but he was such a sweet person and one of the only teachers who would always take the time to stop at my desk and ask how I was doing without needing something. It's crazy to think that just a couple weeks ago, I was checking his blood pressure and chiding him for it being a little on the higher side and now he's gone. He cared so much about the kids (the kind to stockpile snacks for the ones he noticed were hungry, buy shoes/clothing for them, etc). We're all kind of reeling from the loss.

Dang. So sorry. The way you worded that so perfectly about the character of this gone-to-soon teacher. I feel the gut-punch with you and your school community. wow.

Remember this?

One of the students who kept in touch with her came in with his phone and we Face Timed with her.

She is not doing well. She's doing drugs, drinking and getting beat up. By men.

She still calls me Mom, and told me she loves me and missed me. I told her the same.

Uuuugh, guys.
