Hello,
I'm applying to the fall nursing program in January. I'm super excited but I still have some unanswered questions. I tried calling the Nursing Dept at the South Campus and left a message but have not heard a response.
I'm trying to find out what teas version they are testing with in the spring for fall entry. I have read tons of threads from TCC for the past few semesters and it is nice to start a new one for nursing hopefuls like me.
I'm taking Micro in the fall and getting a math class knocked out for BSN. Anyway, hope to get some responses.
My sister did not make it in. actually, it was really rough on me because her letter was sent to my address yesterday so I had to drop it off to her. This last day has been bittersweet.
Yes, I have a list of "don't buy you won't use" and do buy! I'll post those soon! (hopefully tomorrow!) my friend said she bought a book that she never even opened so that should help us! Also, she said the e-books is just another option to use instead of the hard covers. She recommended not using them because most classes you'll want the hard covers to actually bring with you to class!!
I'll post more tomorrow!
Here is a list of the recommendations given to me by my friend....
First off, there's no need to buy these from the bookstore. I looked at all these books in the bookstore and it's easily $1,000, or more. I started looking online, you can find them at Amazon, ebay, cheapbooks.com, textbooks.com, textbooksrus.com Just shop to find the cheapest price. Just keep an eye out for the correct editions, which are listed on the sheet.
Starting with the reference books:
Any of the Laboratory books on the list.
For the Nursing Drug book - Mosby's Nursing Drug Reference
For the Nursing Care Plan book - Ackley's Nursing Diagnosis Handbook (i think it's a care plan book, the list is a little confusing so I'm not 100% on which category that fits in)
He also gave me the Study Guide for the Fundamentals of Nursing textbook, he said he bought it later in the semester and wished he would have had it for the whole semester - said it was the BEST.
He also said not to buy the lab coat. He said they never used them. Umm...lets see, order the name tag at the bookstore early b/c it takes about 2 weeks to come in.
That's all I got. Still unsure about which stethoscope to buy. I remember seeing some earlier posts on here so I might go back and read through.
Agreed with not buying the books through the bookstore. I still will call my friend today when I'm off work to go through the book list again with her. I know for a fact she said she never opened the skills textbook. The labcoat is for your preference. It is simply of you get cold.. My friend uses hers all the time. I'm thinking when it's winter you might want it. I'm not sure if it's used for actual required purposes.
We posted earlier that the littman SE lightweight series stethescope is a really good option to use. This is what both my friend, mom (whose a nurse), and stepdad (whose a surgeon) all use!
Oh, and every class required the "CID" from the bookstore. It stands for course information document and is very essential. Has pretty much all assignments and explanations.
I do not go to Tarrant but I am considering transfering there from DCCCD/Brookhaven. I was wondering if you guys have ever had trouble getting your financial aid/pell grant money on time to pay for classes at Tarrant? I have had such a hard time getting Brookhaven's FA department to pay for my tuition on time and I've been dropped from many classes due to non-payment in the past couple of semesters.
Guess I'm just asking what type of experience with financial aid you guys are having at Tarrant and I'm trying to see if this is how all community colleges are in Texas or if it's just DCCCD's messed up system. I would pay out of pocket for my classes if I had the income but I do not so I really rely on financial aid (which I fully qualify for) to pay for my courses.
I turned in my photograph, MMR vaccine form, and health form from my DR today. I also bought the dimensional analysis book they suggested. Figured I'd get comfortable with it over the summer. I wish we could go ahead and get the drug screen, that is pretty much all I have left, except ordering patches and nametag. I am so excited! Hope everyone had a great weekend.

I think you can purchase a portion of the books at a steep discount, AND get ebook copies as well (there is a flyer from Elsevier in there somewhere). But like you said Loly, I'm gonna have to read it yet again. LOL! I have the packet spread out all over my coffee table, trying to jot down notes on what is due when, what I need to do, what needs to be purchased, etc. I'm likely to go cross eyed before the day is over.
