Hello,
I'm applying to the fall nursing program in January. I'm super excited but I still have some unanswered questions. I tried calling the Nursing Dept at the South Campus and left a message but have not heard a response.
I'm trying to find out what teas version they are testing with in the spring for fall entry. I have read tons of threads from TCC for the past few semesters and it is nice to start a new one for nursing hopefuls like me.
I'm taking Micro in the fall and getting a math class knocked out for BSN. Anyway, hope to get some responses.
Ok guys!! I got some questions answered but unfortunately we couldn't talk about everything quite yet (she has an 8th month yr old.. so we were kinda distracted :)
Textbooks (looking at the orange sheet)-- she said you will need all three foundations theory books, especially the Berman & Elsevier ones. The middle one (lilley) is just a pharm reference book but she found it very helpful. For the clinical she said the first book is simply a book with APA format rules. So, you don't have to get it if you know APA formatting or if you have another book. She did buy it because it was only $8 and she wasn't comfortable with APA. The other book listed is just a book that explain care plans and how to write them. She said there are SO many out there and each explains things a different way so it's really up to you to choose one that you like. She did NOT buy this one but a different one at half price books and still uses it til this day. This is what she recommends. Lastly, the skills book. She said she never, EVER used it. Skills is pretty much all your check-offs (like IV's, PPE, injections, etc.). She did say that you will definitely need to buy the online code that is part of the skills book... but you can buy that by itself without the book and it's A LOT cheaper! Her mom also did it this way. On the back of the sheet, she put a star by the Taber's Medical Dictionary because it's been very helpful for her in all the semester so far. There's one other book she was telling me about that has helped her a lot but I'll have to find out the name of it when she gets back home. So there's the textbooks.
The CIDS. All the CID's explain every assignment in detail, including papers. She said there is a main teaching project, care plans, and some other major assignemnt but they are explained in the CID. Care plans are not going away, but she did tell me that you do one every week and turn it in. It is looked at and comments are written on it from your teacher BUT they are NOT graded. There is one major care plan due at the end of the semester that is graded and that is why they make you do all the rest of them apparently.
She said all the foundations professors are amazing, but she did not recognize two of the names that are online. Clinicals are tough because your grade is pretty much solely rested on your professor, so don't get on the bad side of your teacher. :)
Hmmm... I'm sure I have a lot more to tell ya'll but I can't remember at this moment! Hope this helped a little bit...
She didn't give me any clothing recommendations besides the greys anatomy scrubs. And yes, you can buy scrubs at the orientation but she said is was tough to find stuff in a specific size. She did mention that they were pretty cheap there though!
She hasn't had any conflicts with nurses or doctors at this point and hasn't seen any! She did say that some hospitals are much more helpful than others (JPS is her favorite so far).
And, buy books online at other stores if you can.... way cheaper.
Thanks, lmd. I'm relieved she didn''t mention any research papers. Is the APA just for the care plans then?
I was looking at our information and it says we are supposed to order our name tags at the Trinity River bookstore. Are we not able to order them from the South campus? Has anyone tried yet?
I just ordered 2 magnetic ones (7.99 ea) from SO campus. The cashier said the magnets are awesome. They should be ready in 2 wks.
anotherhopeful- I was wondering the same thing!!! They changed the name of the colors from when my friend got hers because I checked her scrubs wondering the same!! I'm pretty sure Jade would be fine but I haven't ordered any pants yet because of this. I have ordered a top from there though! I was just a little scared of that.... but apparently if you go into a scrub store and tell them you're with TCC they can compare them for you? I've been looking at Landau scrub pants also.. heard they were pretty good and they actually have 'teal' as a choice and petitie sizes (which is perfect for me!) but I still wanted the greys pants because they are SOOO comfortable!
