Support Planned Parenthood Today!

Updated:   Published

I see in the news that anti-choice organizations are planning demonstrations today at Planned Parenthood facilities around the US to support GOP plans to defund PP.

Of course, my first thought was to grab a sign (and my, ummm, "kittyhat"!) and head for my local facility to show my support for PP, but I also see in the news that PP offices are asking that supporters not show up at the facilities to counter-protest (because they don't want the crowds of protesters any larger or more chaotic than necessary as women are trying to get in and out for services).

Some communities are planning counter-demonstrations in other venues, but I haven't been able to find any information about any events planned in my city.

So, I've decided to set aside the time planned for the anti-choice demonstration in my city today to contact all my elected representatives, from the White House down to my state legislators, and Tom Price at DHHS, to remind them that I support PP and am strongly opposed to any efforts to restrict women's reproductive rights or Planned Parenthood's access to public healthcare dollars as a legitimate healthcare provider.

I hope PP supporters here will consider doing the same, and spread the word to people you know. I hope people all over the country will have the same thought. Wouldn't it be great if, while comparatively small groups of protesters are standing out in the cold and snow with their signs, huge numbers of Americans were flooding mail boxes and switchboards around the country with messages of support for PP, women's health, and reproductive rights?

Just because I might have never obtained an abortion, I have no right to speak or decide for another woman. That is a very private decision between the woman and her doctor.

Unless I have walked in her shoes? I don't know what is really going on in her life.

Legality is not equal to truth. The Nazis made it legal to murder Jews. Was this good and just or evil?

Well we are far from Nazis. Did you forget your biology class lessons? Responding with sheer emotion and not much actual facts.

A zygote and embryo are not capable of sustaining life. A fetus at many early stages is also unable to live outside the woman's body unless there is intensive medical intervention.

Most people have the mistaken notion that federal dollars are going to PP to pay for abortion. PP, until recently, was a Title X member. I worked in a Title X Program at the state level, and worked closely with our local PP. It is illegal to use federal money to fund abortion. PP has an excellent Title X Program that provides reproductive health services - gyn exams, birth control, STD and Cancer screenings, for women who do not have insurance or the means to pay privately. Abortion Services are funded separately. By cutting federal funding to PP, we are denying health services to those women who need reproductive healthcare, not those who are seeking abortion.

I totally support planned parenthood. They offer so many health services besides abortion. If you don’t like abortion, don’t have one. That’s my philosophy.

On a side note I contacted my local PP to ask about prenatal care for a patient and was told they don't offer pre-natal care, Nor does my local PP do PAP smears or mammograms. Not saying some locations might not do those things, though.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.....this is my all-time favorite bumper sticker ! If you're against abortion , DON'T HAVE ONE !!

PP should not getting any taxpayer money.

PP is a for profit organization. They have also been exposed selling fetal organs for profit.

I have yet to find a PP that provides services other than abortion.

Abortion should be rare, reserved to save the life of the mother or in cases of rape or inscest but it would not be a convenient means of birth control.

Abortion is also not a benign procedure without risk of physical and psychological injury.

I believe in the dignity and sanctity of human life and the notion that people have these days that is O.k. to kill a baby up until the day it is born is barbaric. It is frightening where that kind of thinking could lead. The Nazis murder spree did not start with the Jews it started with the mentally disabled and the handicapped. And Margaret Sanger who founded PP was a also a racist and fan of eugenics who wanted to sterilize African-Americans.

A little off topic but the same goes for AR-15s. If you don't like guns to buy one. But the issue is not so being for or against abortions -the issue is if the taxpayers should be funding PP. I don't expect the government to buy me an AR-15.

I mean, if one is against abortion they would not have one -but why should they be forced to pay for someone else's abortion?

That’s gonna be a no from me, dawg

I see a great deal of passion and anger in this topic. One issue that should be considered is when you are in the role of a nurse, politics is completely unacceptable. You WILL make half the people angry with an opinion no matter which side you choose. When you go home do what you want. In my opinion this topic is not proper for a nursing forum.

Hmm I don’t see a problem as long as you’re not bringing it up on the job. We’re anonymous here, what is a better medium?
