In NY, the pay rate for school nurses is loooooow. I am thinking I need to supplement.
Do any of you work in the Summer? If so, what do you do?

I do perdiem year round at a local LTC facility. Then I pick up extra shifts (vacations) over the summer. I have my hand in it and am familiar with the residents and am ready to roll when they need me. Works out really well.

i did a few different things (worked for VNA, worked in an office doing clerical work, worked in a hospital as an ADN) but the last few summers i've just done the summer school in my own district. i can't beat the pay rate with anything else. I don't have to run my butt all over the county and go into other people's yucky houses and organize their pills and change dressings and i don't have to file any papers but my own. Granted it cuts into my summer somewhat - but what would i do with my mornings other than watch game shows and drink tea anyhow? ha ha better to rake in the moolah!
I was thinking of going back to my old hospital now and doing the per diem thing 2x a month and then upping it in the summer, but really not sure if that will work out.
How long do the summer school sessions typically last, in your experience?
I will call BOCES here in NY to clarify.
Thanks, all!

Another vote for camp nursing! I've done it for the past 8 summers and take my kids with me. If you are in NY, there are all sorts of camps in NY and NJ. Check it out.

I hang up my stethoscope and work as a bartender at a seasonal restaurant a couple of days a week. A fun change of pace and still get to enjoy most of the summer!
That sounds wonderful!

I also hang up my stethoscope and work for 2 weeks as the technical director of a children's theater camp. The rest of the summer is mine and I budget for it .

I work for the same school but in a different setting with kids from surrounding districts in an extended year summer school program for 6 weeks. All the students have special needs and there are 3 nurses in the office and 1 for field trips. It's a different environment than the regular school year and it's fun working directly with other nurses for a change.
