In NY, the pay rate for school nurses is loooooow. I am thinking I need to supplement.
Do any of you work in the Summer? If so, what do you do?

I have done summer school thru our district; our district also does an open enrollment period for a few weeks in the summer and I have helped with reviewing immunization records. My current PRN job is pedi home health which works perfectly with my school schedule.

I hang up my stethoscope and work as a bartender at a seasonal restaurant a couple of days a week. A fun change of pace and still get to enjoy most of the summer!
I work pool at a pediatric urgent care year round....but this sounds like the way to go!!

Last summer I worked a summer school nurse position in my district for students with special needs. The group I worked with was 3rd grade and younger. It was fun!! I got to dance with them and do arts and crafts!! I never left the classroom because there was a completely dependent student who needed to change positions every 10 minutes.
I'm digging the bartender position though!!

I worked in an academic summer camp last summer. The year before I subbed in my own district for field trips during summer school. Not sure what this summer will bring!

I'm a beach girl in the summer. It kills not having a paycheck but I get very creative with pasta and somehow we make it work each year. This summer I will probably have take some of my Graduate classes but hopefully I'll be doing my reading work sitting in the sand.

I like the "beach girl" or bartender ideas!
I have two jobs - hospice and school nurse. So during the summer I still work hospice.
Coming next November, I will be resigning my school nurse job as it will be the 5 year mark and I decided not to go back and get my School Nurse Credential. In CA you are given a temporary credential and have 5 years to get a real one. Initially I wanted to do it but after working as a school nurse, I decided it just isn't the right job for me. And I don't want to spend more $$ at my age. I'm still paying off the BSN I got 4 years ago.
I've offered to do prn for the district with diabetic students and their insulin needs though. We only have one elementary student and the high school students (2) are responsible for their own needs.

I also work in Ny (western NY). I work per diem on a rehab unit 2 shifts a month (its where I used to work fulltime) and then in the summer I work more. They are very short staffed so I always have work when i need/want it.
This summer I am thinking about applying to work summer school. It's being hosted at my home school this year. The district gives me 2 weeks of work during the month of August, so I can come in and do sports paperwork, etc and i can set my hours for that. Summer school is only 4 hours a day (in the morning) so come august I could work the morning at summer school and then literally walk across the hall to my regular office to work the afternoon. Im the breadwinner so i really need to bring money in!
I'll miss the kids; especially elementary school kids. I get hugs and I'm recognized in the community. A few days ago a Kindergarten student saw me at Safeway and yelled "It's Miss Doctor!". Her grandma let her run over to me and I got a hug.
But that's about all. It really isn't nursing in my district (11 campuses) - I don't assess most of the children except for hearing and vision screenings. They don't come to me with boo boos. The secretaries at each campus do that. Unless I'm on campus when something happens of course - I've been involved in some cases where kids with asthma had to go to the ER and I do give our one elementary school child his insulin via his pump but even that will go away as he gets to do it himself soon. With supervision of course.
I like patient care more than paperwork.
Maybe why I enjoy going to Vietnam on medical missions - no bureaucracy.
Can you tell more about your Vietnam adventures? Or point me to a thread where you discuss this?
I've always said my dream job would be "Restaurant Critic" but my dream NURSING job would be to do a DWB situation, or military RN. Of course, husband, kids, house, parents, yadda yadda, it's not going to happen.
I'll send you the link to the organization in a pm.
This organization goes over with basically a medical and dental clinic in a truck. We go to a different rural village or small town every day. It it usually 2 and 1/2 weeks. I love it.
