Hi there! This thread is for anyone, anywhere that wants to chat about summer courses they are taking. This is our THIRD iteration of semester chat!
What's your schedule like this summer? Any TEAS or HESI preppers?
I'm taking three courses over 5 weeks. Texas Government (online), Chem II (lecture only, on campus) and Music Appreciation (online). School starts for me on June 6, ends July 7.
I'm also taking the TEAS on May 30th, so I'm prepping for that. And all my nursing school applications are due on August 1, so I'm working on that, too.
Hope everyone is well!
xo,
Jen
I think A&P II, Micro, Chem and Nutrition is a bit of a heavy load, especially if you're working. That's not to say that you can't do it - I did four classes with A&P II and Micro, but those were my only two sciences. I might put things off for a year (it sucks, I know), just to make life a bit easier on you. But, you know yourself best :)
Well put, Jen. I agree. That does sound like a very heavy course load, but you know yourself better than anyone. I took microbiology with A&P1 while working full-time, and let's just say sleep was at a minimum and having a social life with friends or family was non-existent.
Hey guys! Long time no talk! Needless to say, I've been extremely busy. A&P II is kicking my butt. And then working 2 jobs on top of it is just adding a whole other dimension to my life. lol We've had 4 quizzes, 1 lecture exam, and 1 lab practical so far. 100% on all 4 quizzes and my lab practical and a 96% on my lecture exam. :) Endocrine and circulatory/blood felt like a cakewalk compared to this unit though- cardiovascular, blood vessels, lymphatic, and immune... all in 7 class periods. Woof. lol I'm trying to stay on top of everything but last week was rough because I worked more than normal. We have another quiz tomorrow, a quiz on thursday, and then our lecture exam/lab practical over this unit on Monday next week. I took PTO on both Saturday and Sunday to study though because lord knows I need it.For those who have taken A&P II, which system(s) did you find the most challenging? Our third unit is respiratory/urinary/water & electrolytes and our fourth is digestive and male/female reproductive. I'm just trying to get a feel on what to expect. As of right now, cardio has probably been the most challenging for me, seeing as we did in all in 2 lectures. I'm a bit nervous for my exam next week because of it. :/
i felt urinary, circulatory, endocrine, respiratory and digestive were way easier than nervous system and reproductive systems.
I have a little over a week left in physio. Doing well in the class. Dev psych (online) started this week, and appears to be pretty easy. I have a one week break after physio ends before anatomy begins. Hopefully, having physio first will help me in anatomy. I got my BLS a few weeks ago, and am hoping to take the TEAS in August. I am also planning to take an ECG class at the hospital in which I am volunteering, to help me with getting my ACLS.
For the fall, I plan to take pathophysiology, pharmacology, microbiology, research/evidence based practice, and information management. Although I am applying to the BSN program for fall 2018, because I am a second degree student, I am knocking out a lot of BSN courses before formal admission to the program. Hoping that I can then knock out some MSN courses while in the BSN program. At 42, I don't have time to waste!
Hello!
I am taking A&P 1 on campus and statistics online this summer over 8 weeks. 5 weeks in I will be starting a CNA course as well on the weekends. It is going to be a busy summer but luckily my employer allowed me to cut back to part time! My goal is to finish all of my prerequisites for my top choice program Fall quarter, submit my application in November, and start the program next June!
Ready... set.. go!

Funny you should say that, but I was actually JUST thinking I might take an extra year to finish my pre-reqs, as eager as I am to get started-- I mean, I hate the idea of "wasting" another year but yeah: my sanity and good attitude are valuable commodities, and taking my time will probably mean better grades, too. Also, spreading it out will make it easier to pay for... thanks for the good advice!
I had enrolled in the minimum required math class (online), but was dropped for non-participation the day before I got paid and would be able to buy the materials to get started on the assignments Just as well as I am going through a particularly rough period in my life. My summer plan is now to study algebra and prepare to retake a placement test so I can get into College Algebra. I'll need it for my RN-BSN eventually anyway and I get extra points towards my application at the community college if I take it instead of the other math class I was enrolled in.
Now I am hoping to take math, A&P2, electronic health records, and human growth & development in the Fall if I can get grants/figure tuition out without having to take out loans. I refuse to take out loans for prereqs. lol.

That's horrible! At my school, even with online courses, most classes give you 1 week leeway due to financial aid distribution being about as fast as molasses in wintertime! Not everybody can afford to buy textbooks before financial is awarded.
I'm so braindead right now, I can't remember if I came to update you on summer classes, Jen. Med term is super easy, we've got learnsmart assignments for each chapter and a unit exam every two weeks.
The rest of my classes, not so much. I'm hanging on though and I'm more than half way done the summer term. I'll have almost five weeks off once it ends, too. I'm looking forward to this break. I tried to stuff in everything at once and not have to wait a semester. And I'm surviving but I'm paying for it. :/
I am now about a week into my six week online psychology course (human growth and development). So far, I am doing well and possibly going above and beyond what is required. My course has had people adding and dropping all week. The "purge" took place Friday at midnight to remove people who had not completed the first assignment.
The only downside is that we have to participate in an online discussion board amongst other activities. We need to address a prompt and post to the thread before 1) we can see what others put and 2) respond to at least two others. It seems like half of the class tries to get things done early and the other half waits until the last possible minute. We have a range between responses that were argued well and responses that left me wondering if we were addressing the same prompt/classroom expectations.
I know passion for learning the material, striving for the best, etc. is not something everyone aims to do. I also realize that doing well in a classroom setting does not mean you will be a good or bad nurse, but I am definitely scratching my head hoping that once grades come in for this first round of discussion things will change. One way or the other, I am just going to keep working hard towards being the best student I can be and creating a solid foundation of knowledge.
This week will be my 4th out of an 8 week summer semester. Microbiology is so much fun and my math class is kicking my butt! The only thing keeping me from freaking out is I was accepted for the fall program, so if I get a B it's not the end of the world. Math is such a struggle for me! Hope everyone else's classes are going well!

That's just one of those things you have to deal with on online classes. All of my classes except the sciences were online and I used to get really annoyed by the posts I was supposed to interact with. They lacked depth and very few seemed to grasp what was being asked. After the first few weeks, I'd find the few students that seemed to take this stuff as seriously as I did, and just reply to them. Hang in there!
Lizzie - congratulations!
I'm hanging in there. 1.5 more weeks and I'm DONE for 5 months. I'm really ready for next Friday. I have 3 tests in Chem with 3 more homework assignments, then my final. In Music Appreciation I have 2 more assignments, 4 quizzes and a paper (no final, yay!), and for Government I have 2 quizzes and a paper. The final for that class is optional, and my grade is a 96 right now, so I probably won't bother to take it.
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! I can't wait to have some time off to just chill (and anxiously await my application decisions) before life gets crazy with a nursing program!
