  1. Kaplan is 5% of our grade. I did the same thing another poster mentioned, did the practice tests on kaptest and remediated every question. It really does help, I tried to do a test a few times a week from day one of the semester. It may seem like overkill, but every percent counts.
  2. We just talked about the ethics of sterilization of prisoners in exchange for a reduced sentence. It was an interesting discussion!
  3. I used the Davis Success Books too, they helped a ton! Math for meds the math portion was pretty basic, for the things I needed to memorize (conversions, needle lengths, etc.) I just made a quizlet and added on as we got new info. I did the quizlet once or twice a week, so by the time finals rolled around it was all committed to memory and that was a class I didn't have to study for. We have pharm second semester at my school, so I haven't had a chance to try out the flash cards mentioned by others, but that's what my study group plans to use once classes start back up. Good luck!
  4. I just finished my first semester, for fundamentals I used the Fundamenatals of Success book by Davis as a supplement almost daily to practice nursing questions. It wasn't a hard class, just time consuming. I know you know this, but stay on top of your reading and assignments. Things start to pile up as the semester goes on. For Health assessments my study group would first write out whatever assessment we were working on, then we'd verbalize the steps to each other til we had them down. Next we'd actually perform the assessments on each other, timing them until we were under the time limit. It took a lot of time but we all did really well. Clinicals were just doing at a nursing home what we learned in theory and lab. We did daily physical assessments, took vitals, blood sugars, did bed baths, changed bedding, etc. Towards the end of the semester we were assisting with wound care and g-tube feedings. I loved it, it was so exciting to finally get started after all the hard work trying to get into a program! We didn't do the other 2 classes you listed, our semesters are laid out a bit differently, we did math for meds which was no big deal.Good luck in you're first semester!!!!
  5. I wish I had good advice, I'm a nervous wreck during skills check offs. We had our head-to-toe on Tuesday and before I walked in I felt dizzy and sick to my stomach. It's ridiculous. í ½í¹„ So know that you're not alone!
  6. I start clinicals on Monday and today we were warned that the facility we'll be at is very warm. I wondered if anyone had tips to keep comfortable in scrubs in the heat? I know they sell those thermo pack things to keep hands warm in winter, I need an ice pack that last all day or something like that. :) I know I should be worrying about bigger stuff, but I don't want to get all sweaty and look gross while caring for patients.
  7. I'm 36 and am in my first semester of nursing school, there are several in our cohort who are older than me as well. I say go for it!
  8. You've got this!!!
  9. I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather, Jen. Losing grandparents is awful.
  10. Math and Micro finals are next Tuesday for me, then Wednesday and a Thursday is orientation for the nursing program!!!! It's finally here!!!! I'm agonizing over what to wear bc I want to look professional, but don't want to look ridiculous if no one else dresses up. Anyone else been to orientation yet? I'm so curious what we need 2 whole days to discuss before classes start.
  11. This week will be my 4th out of an 8 week summer semester. Microbiology is so much fun and my math class is kicking my butt! The only thing keeping me from freaking out is I was accepted for the fall program, so if I get a B it's not the end of the world. Math is such a struggle for me! Hope everyone else's classes are going well!
  12. Same! Summer classes don't start for a couple weeks yet and I'm going stir-crazy. I printed all the power points one of my class has uploaded and am reading over them to keep myself occupied. :)
  13. I have been waiting on pins and needles for a letter (or email) letting me know if I have been accepted or rejected from my school of choice for the fall nursing program. So today I get a letter, from the school, that starts, "Congratulations! I am pleased to advise you that....". So I am ecstatic, thinking I got in. But no, the letter goes on to tell me I made President's Honors last semester. Not that I'm not happy about that, but I almost cried when I realized I still have longer to wait until I find out my acceptance status. I told my family, hoping they'd feel bad for me, but they laughed and said I'm too uptight! I thought maybe someone here would understand. :) Liz
  14. I've only applied to one school, I'll find out in June if I got accepted. GPA: 4.0 TEAS/HESI: not required, they accept solely on GPA of pre-req classes
  15. Congratulations!!! Best of luck to you!
