Suggestions for ways an unemployed new grad nurse can volunteer medical services to help out during the Covid-19?

Nurses COVID

Updated:   Published

I graduated about four months ago and still don't have a job. I'm feel so pathetic/helpless though having a license and not being of any help with the disease. Does anyone know of ways a licensed nurse can volunteer services during the pandemic? (Other than social distancing)

Thanks!

Contact NY state DOH. The url says retired but that is not necessarily the case. I got an email through a professional organization that they are accepting out of state licenses.

Yes try these first.

Specializes in Trauma ICU/PCU.

I don't think finding a clinical work will be an issue in the next few weeks. Hospitals that have been picky will no longer have the luxury to NOT have more RN's in the impending onslaught of covid-19 patients. Healthcare system is becoming overwhelmed.

My suggestion is to keep sending resumes and applying to all ER/ICU/PCU units at local hospitals. That is of course if you really wish to jump into this.

Good luck!

If you have a compact license and you really want to work, come to Texas. Our governor just jumpstarted the careers of new grads by mandate. Hospitals need to backfill the telemetry and high-level med-surg positions as many of those folk have been recruited to the front line ICU. Good luck!

Depending on where you are, call ahead first. I'm an LVN in Southern California, and every LTC/SNF is on lockdown. Nobody but essential staff in or out of the facility, period. As far as whether you wanna dive into this right now, frankly it's your call. Got 2 CNA's that were moonlighting at a facility that got nailed hard with COVID-19 and are on mandatory leave of absence from my current facility (asymptomatic, but have been exposed) and a couple of nurses in my circle (not current co-workers, BTW) sound like they're infected. We're short on PPE & cranking pretty hard to keep up, so you'll be diving in the deep end right now. Really, a public health clinic would be your best bet, or a doc in the box; something outpatient.

It takes several months to obtain a California nursing license, if California truly needed help, they would drop the California state requirement just like new york did

New York needs you right now, Cuomo has made it easy for nurses from any state to come here, you don't need a NY license, get in touch with NYSED and see what they can do, I believe accommodation can be arranged too.

When other states get bad, we will return the favour.

Hi, my hospital is hiring tons of new grads for the nurse residency program. If you are willing to move to Billings, Montana. Both St. Vincent's and Billings Clinic need new grads. I think both are trauma level 2, one is magnet and the other is on the way to magnet. My hospital St. Vincent's offers relocation or sign on bonus and loan repayment. If you message me I can help you get in touch with my recruiter.

New York state is certainly taking volunteers! I believe that new grads, retirees, and nurses who haven't practiced in awhile are eligible (there is surely something we can all do!) Fill out this survey: https://apps.health.ny.gov/pubpal/builder/survey/retired-health-professional
