Students asking for free money

Nursing Students General Students

Upon browsing different nursing groups including this one, I have noticed a new trend...current or nursing students to be asking for money via goFundme. Why don't they apply for scholarships or for student loans the way most, if not all of us, did?

I really think its a self entitlement attitude they have, and no, I am not an old fuddy duddy. I worked part to full time to put food on the table whilst putting myself through nursing school with the help of my money, grants, loans and scholarships as I raised my kids. I am 40 years old now, and I EARNED what I have due to my hard work and yes, I did have hardships just like everyone else. But having put myself through school without asking anyone for free money such as goFundme has made me appreciate everything I have even more.

Yes, Scholarships are a form of free money but that required writing essays, gathering documents, putting packets together, rushing them to the post office before the deadlines, only to get turned down multiple times, but so what? Eventually one says yes, and the efforts pay off. But now people don't want to do any work for it and would rather put their face on the web to ask for a free ride?

I find this very annoying and a slap on the face for those of us that struggled, AND made it. I know I am being harsh and it sounds terrible, but I hope these people that ask strangers to fund their education simply by asking for free money fail school because they do not deserve to be nurses. I know many people that had deaths in the family or other crisis happen in their lives and they got through school by working or loans instead of playing victim and mooching off others. This is my opinion.

Let's be honest.... at some point in a large chunk of adult human being's lives, sex is given or withheld in some sort of attempt to get something one wants. It's offering or its denial can be used as reward or punishment. Whether or not actual cash-money is exchanged can be a pretty fine distinction.

While this may be true for some people, it is not true for everyone.

Poster above was clear about not including everyone.

You seem to know an awful lot about the living conditions and decision making process of people you've never met. I hope that if you ever become a nurse, you'll learn how to be less judgemental.

Hot topic and one which is sure to get posters fired up: either for or against the crowd-funders. While AN welcomes lively debate, please debate the topic, not the poster.

This doesn't have anything to do with the subject, really, but I wouldn't consider a cell phone a non-essential anymore. It's generally expected by employers, educational institutions, businesses, etc. that people have a cell phone. I think that's been the case for at least the past 5-8 years.

Well, sure! Because everyone knows a cell phone is an entitlement as a citizen, not a privilege. That explains why at a local ministry where I volunteer folks come in to ask for $$$ to help pay their bills and all age 50 & under have at least one cell phone account, some have several. It's anti-American not to have at least one cell phone, an iPad (and/or laptop) and a flatscreen TV even if that means you can't pay your electric, gas, cable, have no grocery money or gas for the car. It's just simple logic.

What was the original subject again?

Can we say, derailed?

I am bridging from LPN to RN. During orientation we are warned that working is detrimental to school. Our clinical schedule can change without much notice. Our course work is massive. So, distasteful as it may be, private funding is an option. Its not a quick fix for sudden expenses. Funds generate for 60 to 90 days before they can be withdrawn. I'm not eligible for most grant and scholarship money. I can take out loans, and I am. There are limits to how much one can borrow, though.

Pretty much all schools tell students that. However, the reality is that many are quite capable of working and still succeeding in school. I worked more than full time during my nursing program, with the majority of it being double shifts on the weekends. I graduated with honors. Many others have similar stories to tell.

I've spent some time on a horse board, gotta love the fundme to go show my horse..

I'd be embarrassed.

Don't get me started on the Horse folks. I am on some skilled trade forums like automotive and welding. Every pro that I know that does work for horse people demands cash/payment up front and over estimates the job because they are so full of themselves and have zero money to pay to repair their vehicles, trailers etc. they also complain about everything related to cost and any work needed. Often they refuse work and haul their pride and joy around in unsafe trailers and tow vehicles.

During my LPN program every single person who worked, failed. I don't have family. I don't have any backup.

I will do what I must. I already am working 60 + hours a week saving up before my program starts. Crowdfunding isn't for everyone but how nice it exists as an option.

I worked during school. What kind of school was your LPN program? Curious, because I have a good feeling what type it is.
