Students asking for free money

Published

Upon browsing different nursing groups including this one, I have noticed a new trend...current or nursing students to be asking for money via goFundme. Why don't they apply for scholarships or for student loans the way most, if not all of us, did?

I really think its a self entitlement attitude they have, and no, I am not an old fuddy duddy. I worked part to full time to put food on the table whilst putting myself through nursing school with the help of my money, grants, loans and scholarships as I raised my kids. I am 40 years old now, and I EARNED what I have due to my hard work and yes, I did have hardships just like everyone else. But having put myself through school without asking anyone for free money such as goFundme has made me appreciate everything I have even more.

Yes, Scholarships are a form of free money but that required writing essays, gathering documents, putting packets together, rushing them to the post office before the deadlines, only to get turned down multiple times, but so what? Eventually one says yes, and the efforts pay off. But now people don't want to do any work for it and would rather put their face on the web to ask for a free ride?

I find this very annoying and a slap on the face for those of us that struggled, AND made it. I know I am being harsh and it sounds terrible, but I hope these people that ask strangers to fund their education simply by asking for free money fail school because they do not deserve to be nurses. I know many people that had deaths in the family or other crisis happen in their lives and they got through school by working or loans instead of playing victim and mooching off others. This is my opinion.

Please do not use that term, it is a slur. Sexworker or full service sex worker is the correct term to use. Sexwork can be ideal for some students because it allows women/men/transgender individuals to set their own work schedules and set their own wages. It's easy to judge but difficult to walk a mile in someone else's shoes.

IMO, if someone wants to ask for money on GoFundMe or whatever site, that's their business...and if people want to donate to them, that's their business. As long as it's legal and no one is being forced to do something they don't want to, I couldn't care less.

Yikes this thread took an offensive turn pretty quick. I won't harp on how people pay for school in whatever form they choose to, but if you set up a GoFundMe and no one donates, don't put people on blast and find a other means to finance your education.

College is expensive, but if you've made the choice to enroll, then it should not be the responsibility of strangers to pay.

My eyes are so big right now!!

It's interesting that someone who thinks it's OK to beg money from strangers to finance the lifestyle you've chosen but aren't willing to pay for will get on their high horse about how someone EARNS the money they spend.

An acquaintance emailed me a "gofundme" type of request- asking me to contribute to her kids' college fund- she's the one who decided to have five kids. Jeez, the gall of some people, lol.

This statement is just so contemporary, hip, and so perfectly PC, I just had to smile.

I would trade sex for someone to come clean my house right now..

Inappropriately joking.

I don't consider agreed upon relationships between 2 or more consenting adults where no genuine exploitation is taking place as immoral. I've seen enough women degrade themselves in much sadder situations with much less beneficial outcomes to waste any concern over a mutual agreement.

Let's be honest.... at some point in a large chunk of adult human being's lives, sex is given or withheld in some sort of attempt to get something one wants. It's offering or its denial can be used as reward or punishment. Whether or not actual cash-money is exchanged can be a pretty fine distinction.
