Students asking for free money

Nursing Students General Students

Upon browsing different nursing groups including this one, I have noticed a new trend...current or nursing students to be asking for money via goFundme. Why don't they apply for scholarships or for student loans the way most, if not all of us, did?

I really think its a self entitlement attitude they have, and no, I am not an old fuddy duddy. I worked part to full time to put food on the table whilst putting myself through nursing school with the help of my money, grants, loans and scholarships as I raised my kids. I am 40 years old now, and I EARNED what I have due to my hard work and yes, I did have hardships just like everyone else. But having put myself through school without asking anyone for free money such as goFundme has made me appreciate everything I have even more.

Yes, Scholarships are a form of free money but that required writing essays, gathering documents, putting packets together, rushing them to the post office before the deadlines, only to get turned down multiple times, but so what? Eventually one says yes, and the efforts pay off. But now people don't want to do any work for it and would rather put their face on the web to ask for a free ride?

I find this very annoying and a slap on the face for those of us that struggled, AND made it. I know I am being harsh and it sounds terrible, but I hope these people that ask strangers to fund their education simply by asking for free money fail school because they do not deserve to be nurses. I know many people that had deaths in the family or other crisis happen in their lives and they got through school by working or loans instead of playing victim and mooching off others. This is my opinion.

One should not forget that funds raised through these crowd funding sites are considered taxable income ( At least in the United States) and must be included in Federal Tax returns. The US government is also looking closely at these sites for evidence of money laundering and funding of terrorist activities. Just food for thought.

Pretty much all schools tell students that. However, the reality is that many are quite capable of working and still succeeding in school. I worked more than full time during my nursing program, with the majority of it being double shifts on the weekends. I graduated with honors. Many others have similar stories to tell.

I went to school before begging/crowdfunding. It wouldn't have occurred to me to ask someone else to pay my way. I worked more than full time during school, too. And graduated with honors.

During my LPN program every single person who worked, failed. I don't have family. I don't have any backup.

I will do what I must. I already am working 60 + hours a week saving up before my program starts. Crowdfunding isn't for everyone but how nice it exists as an option.

Just because something exists doesn't make it a desirable or recommended option.

This is an old thread and I didn't re-read all of the responses to see what's already been said. But begging friends, family & strangers for money for something less than a tragic occurrence is a relatively new phenomenon and one that does not sit well with lots of folks. It always brings to mind this saying:

"Failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine."

It seems to me that the most dangerous part of this could be the setting up of expectations. Say a nursing student has a successful GoFundMe campaign. What's next? GoFund my new house? GoFund my wedding? GoFund my first child's college education?

I think you are late to the party'=

This is one of those live and let live things for me. I might donate, I might not - it would depend on the situation and the person. I don't think there's anything wrong with asking for help honestly. Some people are happy to help others for small and big things. Some aren't, and that's okay, too.

I wouldn't do it, it's not my style, but I don't have an issue with other people doing it.

Craziest request I saw was one asking for money so the person could buy season skybox seats at Giants Stadium because he/she was such a fan of the football team.

I remember the big scandal with that Jahi McMann (?) family who took the money and spent it on high ticket items like designer purses & stuff. And bragged about it. The ad was pulled.

Haven't heard anything about her in a loooong time.

Don't remember about the football tickets but there were donations.
