from a student to the 'old' nurses

can i just say a huge "thank you" to all of you who are able to juggle your usual duties and include the students who invade your work world.

you've taught me your routines and tricks, educated me in the right and wrong ways to do procedures. you've encouraged me to keep going when i thought i had made a great mistake in changing directions with my life.

y'all make the difference in a successful clinical experience to us.

You are welcome! I love having students working alongside of me :) I won't lie, it is very time consuming (especially in the ICU setting), but I really enjoy it. Then again, I know a couple of people I work with that should not be paired w/students :uhoh21:

Just remember to never forget where you are now and how you feel.

i LOVE working with students. they're a lot of fun, and have great questions and insights. they often bring joy into the workplace.

That's good to hear. So many students come here to vent (and rightfully so) how coldhearted nurses are to them. Glad you're having a good experience. :)

Oh, BTW, I'm not OLD, I'm just well-used . . . er, I've . . done a lot . . ??? I mean, I'm experienced . . .err, um . . . . I've been around the block a few times . . . uhhhh, well . . . hmmmm, maybe I AM old!!

Wow, Cindy, that is so sweet--thank you!!! I was afraid this was going to be one of those "Why do nurses eat their young?" complaints.

I have been an RN since '81, and I remember the student experience like it was YESTERDAY. It does not become much better when you are a new grad--you are afraid to open your mouth, lest some older RN blast you for being a "know it all" or being too "by the book." So, you don't talk much at all.

I learn from new grads every day, and I hope to pass on everything I have learned in my transition from student to seasoned nurse without sounding like a "know it all" or making them feel too intimidated to ask me questions. They can ask me anything they want, and, if I do not know the answer, I will try to find out for them. We can BOTH learn from the experience.

I cannot tell you the number of new things I have learned from new grads. Many is the time I have been in an operating room with a new RN or OR tech, watched the way they did something, and thought to myself, "Now, that is a REALLY good idea--that is the way I am doing it from now on."

So, students and new grads, thank YOU for sharing your 21st century knowledge base and life experiences with US!!!

Oh--I am 50--but I don't feel a day over 16!!

Thank you Cindy ... it is nice to hear. I really enjoy working with the students and find that when students are with me, I tend to learn more. So the learning is not always one sided. Students bring a lot to the unit and I am thankful you all are there.

We just sent our last clinical group off to graduation. We will miss them as they were great! Now, we anxiously await our new clinical group ... time for molding and shaping again. :)

It's really great when students enjoy their placements with us. I well remember the cold looks and reluctant manner when I was a student, I vowed that when I was an RN I wouldn't do the same!!! Pretty pleased to say that most of the time I achieve that, in fact have students in our area who have told us how much they are enjoying it because we are all so friendly ad helpful. That gives all of us such a huge buzz! Keep up the friendly positive manner that always helps!!!
