So we want to be respected as educated professionals?

Can we start with grammer, speling, and punctiation?

I am amazed at the number of postings in here that assault the written English language. I am not referring to perfection, Lord knows I make plenty of mistakes myself. I am definitely not referring to those who's first language is not English. I am speaking to the outright ignoring of the basics.

It doesn't take but a second to capitalize your "I's." Really it doesn't.

Perhaps I am just old, cranky, and out of touch with the texting generation.

But when i c posts with run on sentencis multiple mispels lack of punctuation like apostophes in conjuctions im wonderin if u r able 2 c what im saying lol i mean. omg. we look like illiterit.

:)

P.S. to Grammar Nazis here, yes the wored "conjunction' was on purpos.

"every nurse should be a bsn because they have perfect grammar!"

they who? can't be "every nurse," because that's singular, one person, and "they" is plural. are they the "them/them" we always hear about, the ones who say, "they always say..."?

oh, wait, was that was a joke too?

i am so confused.

Allow me to share a tidbit of a fellow student's contributions to a group project we were doing in Sociology last year:

"We might of maid it if we could of drove to the stadiem right away but the crowde of peeple out-side mad it hard for us to get to are car so we took to long and got to the stadiem late and we missed the a first part of the game which was realy a bummer cause we we're exited to see the badger's play."

Are you serious? Ok, you mean to tell me that the student submitted this in a word processing document format for a formal sociology paper?

Also, what kind of assignment was this? It looks like a Facebook post, rather than the substance of a sociology paper. That's what makes me doubt the legitimacy of your claim. Sorry.

I absolutely cringe when I see text-speak or lol cats-speak.

I can haz cookie? :barf01:Millions of people love animal pictures captioned with nauseating babytalk. I will never understand that although I do have a soft spot for the O RLY? owl. There's also a hairless feline saying **** you with the perfect expression on his face.. Sorry in advance for offending the lolcats fans.

Dudette - my son is 3 weeks in to a community college basic English writing class. He brought a few essays home to constructively criticize. It is bad out there. Not as bad as the above, but bad. All our area CCs have had to greatly expand remedial Math and English because kids graduate from high school barely literate so often. >:-(

That's sad. But stuff like this, written by educated people, is just as sad:

"I put effort into avoiding the influence of any unconscious bias on my part in decision making."

Real example from my husband's annual diversity survey from his employer. Translation? "I try to make unbiased decisions."

Good lord. You get crap at all educational levels.

I don't think there is a huge difference in writing skills between different degrees on this forum. As to other reasons for and against that edict, the argument is in session down the hall and two doors to the right.
If u can't understand a message, 1. clarify the meaning behind the literature, 2. Offer constructive criticism or 3. do not respond. If enough people ignored poorly written material it would force others to improve their grammatical skills in order to communicate. I am not ignorant. A piece of paper certainly does not magically endow an individual with the capabilities of having perfect writing skills but my argument to the op is that maybe the next step to improving the profession of nursing should be a goal that possibly almost inevitably targets at least two birds with one stone.

Giv me a brake.. I am typing.. hur..not a secratary.. a nurse!

The assignment was for each of us to write a short (1-2 page paper) on a "social event" that we attended or participated in. The previously mentioned student wrote about a local football game she went to. I wrote about one of my experiences going to an auto race, another student wrote about being a bridesmaid at her sister's wedding, and another student talked about going to Mardi Gras one year. In this paper, we were to outline significant parts of this event that characterize it, as well as come up with key points that make the event specific to the culture (major, minor or micro) in which it happened. We then shared papers with each other in class, and as a group worked up comparisons and contrasts between these different events.

Finally, we compiled this list of what made them alike and different, and I ended up being the one to put all four papers plus the critiques of the group into one document for submission. In hindsight, I probably should have asked permission before 'modifying' her paper and notes, but at the time I just figured it was part of the job. I was careful to stick to what she was trying to write and say. I didn't embellish anything at all, just corrected spelling and grammar mistakes. However, she was very upset by this. Lesson learned, on my part.

Aside from that, it was an interesting project.

And as Nursel56 states, it might be that it's a community college, but I'm seeing this sort of thing (college level papers that look like long-winded Facebook posts) so much more often than I expected to. Then there's the ones who play Farmville during the whole lecture on their laptops, or Angry Birds on their phone/tablet/etc. I expected the grade book to shake a lot of these students out, but that didn't actually start happening until I got into classes like Dev Psych and A&P.

The school is great for those who take it seriously, though.

Where did you get the idea that I couldn't understand a message? You responded below a full quote of the OPs complaining about the abysmal writing skills dispayed by some of the patrons here with this:

Can we start by requiring that the entry level to Registered Nursing be BSN prepared?

I don't know of any alternate explanation there can be but that you are of the opinion that "BSN prepared" nurses have noticeably better writing skills. I disagree whole-heartedly, and all my post stated was simply that. I'm sure you aren't ignorant -- but why are you telling me that? I never called you ignorant.

I must have missed a post in there or something - I never saw you elaborate on the topic.

should be a goal that possibly almost inevitably targets at least two birds with one stone.

Getting your bachelors doesn't suddenly make you stop writing loose for lose, worse for worst, click for clique, nitch for niche, indebt for in depth etc. If you haven't picked that up by the time you graduate form high school it is unlikely to change.

An appropriately placed and sparingly used LOL cat or other meme is fun! (to me). But yes it can be wayyyy overdone.

The ORLY owl is OK by me too.

Oh, and ceiling cat is watching u. :)

Just wanted to let you all know, sometimes on my IPad, it spell corrects things incorrecty or does not pick up other things. My fault to not rereading all the time. That could be some of the problems.
