Good question. I wonder too, for all of us looking for jobs. I usually just keep mine active for peace of mind regarding previous jobs.

Google scrubbing in on facebook. There's a page that explains everything, where, who, and some of the reasons why nurses are upset. Canadian nurses and Canadian nursing organizations have actually written letters to MTV about their dismay regarding this show. Curious what ANA and other nursing organizations think?

I agree V neck. Sucks that this is normal for nursing...the opposite of what I was taught.

I was told that I should not be a nurse as well. Actually he told me, "I would not let you take care of my mother!" This was from a clinical instructor I saw maybe once a day for 5 minutes during my clinial rotation. I had to go over his head because I felt like I was being bullied. He still teaches part time, but I passed with flying colors! He even joked around with my class during orientation that he had a new grad that he was preceptoring terminated because she should not have been a nurse. Try not to let that teacher define you and prove them wrong.

Go to the interview. See if you get offerred the job first. Wait to quit if you get a final job offer from the VA, it can take months to get cleared for everything by the VA, if you decide to. Only you can decide

ShouldI -network and volunteer during school as much as you can. Looking back, I wish I had prior medical experience. During school I was raising two kids on my own, separating from an abusive spouse in court as my own laywer (and won), and battling a chronic pain condition. So that left me little time for anything but studying. You can do it, just be mindful that it is all about who you know and getting your foot in ANY door. Always ask for recommendation letters during clinicals WHILE you are in school and at every job you have, before you give notice. Volunteer for anything you can and keep a running tab of all your experiences to refer to later. And get to know your professors. The market for nurses has to get better.

I have similar stories RN that never was......disqualified from Versant Program after 2nd interview, always everybody's second choice because they have experience, disqualified from VA after job offer, moved three times, and now in refresher program. Yep, becoming a little jaded. I knew finding a job would not be easy, but had I known nursing was so dysfunctional, I might have studied something else!! Just gotta get motivated and get back out there. Believe me, I know...I feel like hiding.

Definitely second the, "Do not make waves until AFTER your probation period". You are going to see alot of things you may not agree with. Keep your mouth shut and cover your butt. It is a real bummer, and not what we were taught in school, but the truth.

Search everywhere for scholarships. When you find one that has passed, put it on your scholarship calendar for next year so you do not miss it, with the link to the application. Keep all your essays/nursing entrance/college essays. They come in very handy when writing all those essays for scholarships (just a little change here and there makes things amazingly easy). Check out all your local organizations (Elks Club, Soroptomist, parents employers, etc.) and even other college financial aide websites and offices. Tell everybody to keep their eyes out for scholarships.

Buy a good care plan book. It will give you ideas. Heck, they are probably online now.
