So how/what do people react when you tell them you're a student nurse?

Published

i just wonder what other people who are not nurses or not in the medical field think of student nurses. Any of you got different reactions? please share!

Reaction is always positive. Told nurses are angels. Told excellent career choice. Asked how much longer under I graduate. Stuff like that.

"Can you see if that lump on my neck is cancer?"

Me: "That's something you'll need to see your doctor about".

But overall, I've gotten positive reactions. Many people will start talking about their mothers/sisters/wives that are in nursing.

Non Nurses always give me the great field to get into, good money, never have a problem finding a job spill...

Nurses always seem to become alot more friendly when they find out that I'll be starting clinicals soon. Last week I was getting my immunizations and the nurses were very cranky/unfriendly until they found out I needed shots for nursing school. Then they all had to tell where, and how long ago they went to nursing school, and they told me if I ever needed to do a special presentation , to call them and they would let me come by and get informaton or interview patients. Its like nurses/nursig students have this universal sisterhood (brotherhood)... I think thats cool.:yeah:

Where I live, everyone thinks it's wonderful, except my "alternative" friends (punk/goth/fringe), who I think just think I'm weird for going. Lots of comments about the money and "never having trouble getting a job". Alot of people who have known me for awhile express disbelief that I would go to nursing school, because I was always more of an artsy person. They'll say "I have a hard time seeing you as a nurse."

My family personally love it, because my mom's mother was a nurse, so they all really look up to them.

Specializes in interested in NICU!!.

most people tell me, 'you're smart for going to college', and others say the 'money' thing, but for the most part they're all happy since i will have a degree and i know most of my co workers think they're too old to go back to school for anything. i tell them that they should go to one of my classes so they can see the age group and they'll see people their own age.

my family is super happy, and i can't wait to finally put rn after my name!!!

Hi, the reaction I receive from strangers is always positive, similiar to what everyone else has said. What makes me sad is that many people in my family are negative. This completely suprised me when I first started my journey. I really thought they would have a loving reaction. So yeah I'm still upset about it. Just the other day my sister told me that she's having a hard time saying anything nice to me about school because she believes that getting my degree will change me into a snob. What is wrong with her? That is not who I will ever be because my faith in God keeps me humble and grounded. :crying2: Pretty much the same reaction from almost everyone in my family.

From guy friends/acquaintances: "Wow you will be the best looking nurse!" (I'm thinking, yeah, being good looking will definitely help my patients.) "You can be my nurse anytime." (What else do I expect to hear from 20 year old males?)

From everyone else: Good choice, excellent field, you'll never have to worry about finding a job. (Heh, right.)

Specializes in LDRP.

all my friends say "oh good, you can take care of me when im sick" and of course when anything is wrong with them they ask me what it is and how to fix it.. my response is usually: go to the doctor! haha

also, most guys i meet at the bar are like "oh thats hot, do you get to wear a little outfit?"

hahaha yeah, my baggy scrub pants are reeeeaaaalllyyy sexy.

I usually get responses such as, wow you must be smart... and great career choice, and of course the job thing!

The reaction I get without fail is some form of shock. They pause, and search for words. Maybe it's because I'm 58. Maybe it's because I am a man. Maybe it's because it's my fourth career. I really don't know. Doesn't matter, My wife and grown 'kids' are behind me all the way, and I am ready for this and can't wait to finish school and practice.

I know a man a few years younger than you who just got his RN. He loves it and finds his age to be very beneficial in the hospital setting.

I alway get this blank stare and then something to the effect of, "How do you have time to study?" (I have 3 kids, the oldest is 3 :lol2: ) I tell them I don't get much sleep.

Whenever i go somewhere after clinicals and still have my scrubs on older people especially come up to me and comment how great it is that im pursuing nursing. im not gonna lie, its a great feeling :) The typical response is 'thats great!' or 'good for you!' And then something about always having a job (which is kinda irritating actually). But still i love that i've never had a negative response when i state im a nursing student.
