So many mixed feelings... how about you?
I start on the 23 with orientaton and I am definetly experiencing a bunch of diffferent emotions. The program I'm attending is only in its second year, so we've been getting all of out information last minute. So I I was anxious and excited to get my textbooks, and supplies but after getting my handbook on Friday I'm getting really nervous. The main thing that scares me is that we have a dosage calculations test on the 25th

Do you have children?
YOU CAN DO IT!!! I started taking prerequisites in 2008 with 3 kids and it worked out great for me... I'll be starting NS on AUG. 28:yeah:.I managed to work some, make excellent grades, and keep my children involved in ballet, soccer, and church. I just had to learn to juggle. I would get up early or stay up late to study, and when I became overwhelmed I had to prioritize, so I quit my job. You may have to sacrifice somethings but I've never heard anyone regret sacrificing in order to further their education! So just do it! SN: I feel that being older (28) and having kids helped me excel b/c I had sooo much to lose if I failed.

How did you memorize path of bloodflow in the heart?
Drawing and labeling the heart really helped me visualize the pattern of bloodflow. Also remember: 1. Just as veins bring blood into the heart, so does the Vena Cava ( inf.& sup.) 2. Just as arteries take blood away from the heart, so does the Aorta 3. Pulmonary refers to the lungs, so pulmonary artery takes blood away from heart to lungs and pulmonary veins bring blood into the heart from lungs 4. Flows from atrium to ventricle b/c letter A comes before V 5. atrium/ventricles seperated by valves Hope this helps.

Will I forget it all??
I disagree with the poster who suggested taking everything over if you didn't get an "A" . That's just outrageous! To answer your question, you won't forget what you learned. I think our minds store away all of the info that we don't use in our everyday lives, then if/when the subject comes up it triggers that knowledge we already have on the subject. Just keep your notes and review from time to time, and more than likely you'll be fine. Good Luck with nursing school next year!!

What type of RN do you wanna be?
I hope to start off working in women's health( like an OBGYN's office) , until I get my masters degree in public health. Then, I would like to work in a community health setting that focuses on patient education and prevention ( like planned parenthood).:redbeathe

So how/what do people react when you tell them you're a student nurse?
Non Nurses always give me the great field to get into, good money, never have a problem finding a job spill... Nurses always seem to become alot more friendly when they find out that I'll be starting clinicals soon. Last week I was getting my immunizations and the nurses were very cranky/unfriendly until they found out I needed shots for nursing school. Then they all had to tell where, and how long ago they went to nursing school, and they told me if I ever needed to do a special presentation , to call them and they would let me come by and get informaton or interview patients. Its like nurses/nursig students have this universal sisterhood (brotherhood)... I think thats cool.

Science/Math isn't your thing, but you're doing it
Throughout high school, I earned a D or F in every, I mean EVERY math and science class I took. So obviously I considered my self one of those "I hate math/science" people.Fast forward ten years and I have gotten "A"s in every math and science class that I had to take as a prerequisite. Who would have thought?!!! I think what helped me with math was growing up and actually using math (fractions/percents/algabraic equations) in everyday life. Now that I'm older I realize that math is very practical. As far as science is concerned, I just love the human body so anatomy and physiology just come easy because I'm so interested in the subject. So my advice is ... Don't label yourself as someone who hates math/science, once you give it a try you may be better at it than you think! Trust me, I overcame this obstacle and I'll be starting nursing school in about 7 weeks!!!

Black Hairstyles
Oh my goodness Emile, you must've been reading my mind. I was just online looking for some sort of professional ,natural or press-n-curl style for nursing school.I 've been natural for three years and usually wear my hair pressed out or in a weave. But I'm very concerned that my very thick/coorifice hair will not hold a press during nursing school clinicals and I don't want to offend anyone by wearing it in its natural state. I live in a very conservative part of VA and only about 4 out of 40 NS are african american. Are there any women who can speak on this situation from experience, and give suggestions.

Nursing School Application Questions
Happy New Year, After a year of pre-reqs the time has finally come for me to complete my nursing school application .I know all of you nursing students are very busy but I have a few questions for those of you who have sucessfully completed the process. Any advice is greatly appreciated! 1. Re: recommendations. My A&P teacher (last semester) was also my academic advisor and I could really use his recommendation. I had perfect attendance in his class, and out of his exams I earned four A's and two B's, and he knows I'm a serious, organized student. But I'm kind of nervous about the reccommendation b/c I haven't spent anytime around him other than class/advisement times, (and although I earned a B for the semester) I'm almost positive I failed his final:imbar. SHOULD I JUST SHOOT FOR THE RECOMMENDATION? 2. Re: "Experiences and activities including awards, and community service." In high school I was involved in a number of clubs and civic organizations... but that was 10 years ago! Since then the only volunteer experience I have had is in my church ( children's church, teens, women's ministry, and clerical volunteerism). In our town there isn't much opportunity for volunteering, most of the other applicants I 've talked to don't have any vlounteer exp either. SHOULD I GO BACK AND LIST MY HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, AND SHOULD I BOTHER LISTING MY CHURCH COMMITEES? Just FYI I am applying to a small hospital based diploma program, that will accept 30 students. THX!

Pre-Nursing students what has been
At my CC we have to take Dosages and Calculations as a prereq. and its extremely challenging. There are LPN's and Pharmacy Techs that perform these operations on a daily basis and they're barely passing ...(the professor is like an urban legend)! Although I'm an A student ,I'm praying for a "C" so I never have to see this guy again.

Study supplements ...Please answer ASAP
i decided to post this on the general nursing student boards because i figured many/most of you have already completed a&p. anyhoo, right now i have a high "b" avg in anatomy and physiology i and i'm really shooting for that a... which means i need to make a on the rest of my assingments (1 test,1 lab practical, & 1 final exam). i know i can get atleast 97% if i had something to help me understand the material in laymen's terms. so my question is what resource, besides your textbook, did you use to help you earn your a? fyi , i allready have the anatomy coloring, and i'm considering a&p for dummies or maybe a&p cliffnotes if they exist.

First AP lecture exam! Freaking out!
Mrsb04, Please don't be offended:heartbeat but...OMG you should have started studying the day/night after your first class. I work 30+ hrs a week, have 3kids, and I take 10 credits at night so I know it maybe hard , but you've got to study daily. Trying to learn 4 chapters in 2 days ... not a good idea! To answer your original question... I compare my notes to the text in order to make sure I understand what I'm learning, and then I oraganize my notes and make notecards from them, then I write the questions and answers down repeatidly ( 15/20 times if I have to) until I know it.After I know the info I use my notecards to quiz myself ( over and over) . Good Luck. It will be hard this time, but you CAN do it ... anything is possible!
