Im 24 and I want to be a nurse badly but my age discourages me!
Oh girl stop stressing! I didn't even know that I for sure wanted to go for nursing until I was like 26! I had all my pre-reqs completed by the time I was 27 (I had completed some a few years before) and was ready to go and even got into a program but had to deny my acceptance because I got PREGNANT! Well I got into a program this last fall at 28 years old with a now almost year old son and I will be 30 when the program in over! I used to worry I was 'too old' but you're never too old and I have classmates in my cohort that are pushing 50! And as far as looming at your high school friends FBs and comparing lives...just bc they have their 'dream job' or whatever they say their perfect life is...does not mean they have it all. It's the Internet! You can put whatever you want up and lie about how happy you are! Lol everything happens when its supposed to, no matter your age! :)

How do you study with a baby?!?
Yes my first baby...and I won't be having another until I am finished with school and graduated! :) I supposed I will just have to adapt to less sleep and really take advantage of any "free time" when the baby is sleeping or not needing my attention, although that seems rare. He still is not able to entertain himself for more than 5 mins at a time. Sometimes I can get 15 mins if I put him in his jumper and put on The Fresh Beat Band (HE LOVES this annoying show). Thank you for your thoughts!

How do you study with a baby?!?
Thank you for your replies. Unfortunately I still need to work Fri and Sat but am hoping soon to not have to. My son takes 2 naps a day, one is when I am at school, as I don't usually get home until 1-2ish from class. Then he 'sometimes' takes a nap at like 2:30-3ish for another 1-2hrs. He usually in asleep by 7-730p which is nice, but after I get him to bed...I only have the energy to study til 10. I guess I will just need to get used to functioning on no sleep...I'm used to not getting sleep (I haven't slept well for over a year due to pregnancy and my baby waking up all night)...just not used to studying and learning while tired. Caffeine much? :)

How do you study with a baby?!?
Hello all! I'm a first Qtr NS and am having a hard time finding time to get Hw done, read and complete all the activities for my classes. I have a 9 month old and everyone that offered to help watch him (my hubby watches baby while I'm at school and then goes to work) when I got into NS seems to be MIA now that I'm in! I've never gone to school w a child and not used to not being able to study for hours on end. So to all the parents out there w little ones and are in NS or graduated...how did you study and when???? I feel like I never have time with him and class and working 2 days/week!

Tacoma Community College Nursing Program: Spring 2011
I GOT IN RAINYDAYZ!!!!! I just found out yesterday morning and I am still in SHOCK! No I didn't take Chem 131 and I went to GRCC! I prob should've taken 131 b/c eventually I want to get my BSN but I will focus on my RN for now!! :) I am sooo excited!! I just got all the paperwork and have been trying to fill that out. I am taking my CPR cert tomorrow and picking up the AIDS/HIV video at school as well. I am just figuring out my immunizations and hoping all my financial aid is set and ready to go. It sucks I miss the big orientation, but Nancy is setting one up with me soon. I have no idea what the schedule will be either, which is hard b/c my hubby is trying to get a new job, I work and we have an 8 month old little boy! I am hoping I can still work at least a couple days a week and we don't have to pay for daycare. Are you still going to be working?!? BTW..I'm Jennea. And I can't wait to meet you and start this journey! My friend Tammy is in our cohort too! :) Oh should I wait to complete the Magnus thing until I have my immunization docs, certs and what not scanned? I still have to figure out how to do all that. I also need to get my health insurance and update car insurance. What else am I forgetting? LOL Oh they didn't tell me all the supplies I will need and what is acceptable for clinicals. I am sure I will find out in orientation but I am trying to plan b/c we are a little broke. OMG I am just still soooo amazed!!!

Tacoma Community College Nursing Program: Spring 2011
congrats to you all! i applied to both spring and fall and was not accepted. the frustrating thing is this fall they only took 22, when they normally take 24 and i was 23 on the list!!! so close!!! the head of the dept said i may still be accepted if someone gives up their spot...but i just don't know why anyone would do that?!? so i guess i should just plan to hopefully get picked in the winter huh? i wondered...since i still need to get my BLS and AIDS/HIV cert done...should i just go get my CNA (before school starts, in the hopes that i get picked) or just wait til like Sept/Oct? I need my CNA to apply anywhere else. Thanks! GL to you all!!

I'm #23 on the lottery that only takes 22!!!
So I applied to my local CC's RN program for this Fall and it is a lottery. For some reason this quarter they are only taking 22 students (used to be 24) and I am #23 on the list!! The dept said if someone refuses their admission, the next on the list will be chosen (ME!!!). How many of you had this same experience and ended up getting in??? Everyone keeps telling me that most likely SOMEONE will give up their spot (maybe were accepted elsewhere more favorable, or whatever...I gave up my spot last year at a different school b/c I was preggers), but it may take until the first day of class to know! How should I prepare myself for this mentally and physically??? What if I actually don't get in. :/

Need some advice - baby + nursing school
Thank you everyone for your advice. I am just going to apply and see if I get in. It's a lottery system at the school that I would be applying to, so the chances are pretty low. I think I would regret not applying and just waiting til Fall and then possibly not get in then and have to wait til Winter or Spring of the next year! I have lots of support from my hubby, my parents and his parents...as well as friends who are already volunteering to help baby sit. Since the program is part-time too (only a few days a week), I think that would be do-able with a little baby. I would still get to spend lots of time with my little one and wouldn't be balls to the wall, like I would in a full-time program. Thanks again! :)

Need some advice - baby + nursing school
Hello everyone! I am expecting my first baby at the end of December and finished all my nursing pre-req's Spring Qtr of this last year. I decided to post-pone my applications to nursing school for this current Fall b/c almost all the programs I was going to apply to did not allow one to take time off for pregnancy/child birth. Originally I decided to wait to apply for Fall 2011...the only thing now is almost every nursing school is requiring CNA certification to even apply. I do not have my CNA certification at the moment, but will be acquiring it either Spring or Summer qtr of 2011. My dilemma now is the ONE RN school that does NOT require CNA certification has a part-time option for their program that begins Spring 2011...so should I apply? Would it be crazy to go to RN school with a 3-4 month old baby? The program is part-time so I figured it wouldn't be impossible and my hubby and I have a great support system...I am just nervous that it may be crazy to do it. I know there is the possibility that I may not even get in for Spring, and have to wait for Fall anyways...but should I just go for it? Any mommies out there that have experience being a nursing student with a baby/small child? Thank you for your advice.

Pregnant and Want to get my CNA
I am 5 months pregnant and would like to take the 3-5 week CNA course that a local facility provides in my area. I am wondering if being pregnant would hinder my ability to take the course? I know you have to assist moving patients and am not sure if that would be safe for me, as my doctor recommends not lifting more than 30lbs. Has anyone every completed the training while pregnant/should I just do it anyways? I won't have anytime after the baby is born to take the course before applying to RN programs, so I am thinking now is the best time. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)

2 months preggo and starting to apply...HELP
Mi Vida Loca--thank you so much for your response. It help me put things into better perspective. I have decided to wait to apply. There is no sense in hurrying and even if I did apply for Fall, I might not get in...so I won't be behind or anything. If I wait for Spring, then after delivery I will have a good three months off with my baby and a total of 3 quarters off of school (Summer-Winter), that I will be more than ready to go back when the time comes. Also, one of the programs that I am very interested in has a part-time option available starting Spring qtr that allows you to work if you need or be with your family and isn't as demanding as the full-time program. I;ve worked too hard in my pre-req's to not go back, like some people warned may happen after taking time off, that it will be worth the wait. I know I want to be a nurse and even if that means a little delay in getting going, it's better to take my time so I can do a good job, then rush and stress myself out, my husband and my future child. :)

2 months preggo and starting to apply...HELP
Thank you so much for your replies ladies. I am still having a hard time deciding what to do. The programs I have been looking into said I could take a quarter off to be with my child after delivering (I would take off Winter Qtr), but a spot back in the program in the Spring is not guaranteed. Also, I have NO IDEA what my pregnancy will continue to be like through Fall qtr if I were to get in and go. So far I have had pretty awful morning sickness, and going to my pre-req classes the last couple weeks has been a challenge. I am in excellent health, but still do not know what to expect. I am nervous of not being able to make clinicals or because my due date is so close to the end of the quarter, that it may interfere with finals or being able to complete the quarter with an acceptable grade. Child care is not an issue when I do go back, as my parents have volunteered to watch the baby as needed and my husband works evenings. I do plan on breastfeeding too. I am going to go to nursing school no matter what, so going back will not be an issue, whether I wait to apply or get in and have to take time off. I know nursing school is rigorous and with a newborn will be a challenge, but I have a great husband and support system so I know I can do it. It's just deciding when to do it, that I am having the most trouble with. Thanks again for your input! :)
