So how/what do people react when you tell them you're a student nurse?

i just wonder what other people who are not nurses or not in the medical field think of student nurses. Any of you got different reactions? please share!

Are you talking about patients you see in clinical, or friends/acquantainces? All my friends and people I meet think it's pretty cool, at least that's what they say to my face.

They say, "Oh, that's why we haven't seen you in years."

Friends and family knew I was crazy before I ever told them I was going back to school.

With patients, I often have to convince them I'm actually a student because I'm a little older than most expect a NS to be.

For the most part, people are like "That is great! We sure do need more of you!"

Most people tell me how smart I am for doing this!

They say, "Oh, that's why we haven't seen you in years."

LOL! Exactly.

I showed up at our cabin for 4th of July weekend and EVERYONE there (4 years old on up) asked me, "What are you doing here?"

I usually get:

"Oh good for you! Lots of money and jobs in the medical field"

The response actually kinda irritates me. I didnt go into nursing because they make good money or because the field has a positive job outlook. I am a nursing major because I want to be a nurse. Plain and simple. The fact that I will have an easier time getting a job than say the education majors at my school is a nice benefit, but certianly not why I want to be a nurse.

"Oh you'll never have a problem finding a job." If only they could read the posts on here.

Specializes in CVICU.

"Oh you're in nursing school? What's this rash on my coin purse?" *drops his pants*:barf01:

"You will always have a job, everyone needs a nurse just as much as they need water. You chose an excellent field to get into!"

Specializes in Junior Year of BSN.

Ditto on those comments about it being a great career choice especially about the stability and that healthcare is a career that will never go away. Oh yea and the comment about the money. Do they think I am majoring to become a petroleum engineer (highest paid bachelor career choice just in case you didn't know)?
