Sad that we may need a category for this.

Another school shooting in NoCal.

Thinking of NoCalMimi and hoping she's okay.

We were scheduled for a lockdown drill for today before the shootings happened. (Actually happened while I was posting)Hubs school got an email yesterday that said something along the lines of "it's been a while since we've practiced a lockdown, we will have one Thursday."

I'm supposed to go to the principals office for the lockdown, reality: I would likely go to my bathroom as it is the closest and I would have to run in front of the office windows which are in direct view of the front door.

We had a dad come to pick up his sick son while in the lockdown. We may or may not have broke the rules and come across the intercom at the door to let him know we were practicing a drill and couldn't let him in, with everything that happened yesterday we didn't want him to panic.

They just teach us run, fight, hide at my school. We used to do drills, but stopped because our local police revealed that a shooter would likely be a student and by doing drills with students, we were making ourselves more vulnerable. So we talk it through at staff meetings only.

Did anyone read/see more about the interactive training using simulators?

Not simulators but our district has 2 Police Officers for our 6 campuses. The active shooter drill, of course, will only be known to the campus administration. The Police Officers will walk the halls firing real handguns (blanks of course!)...the sound is quite impressive and compels quick action.

At my father-in-law's school they had a disaster emergency where they had kids (teachers kids) simulate being injured and so on. He took a video and the sounds of the screams was eerie.

ETA: This was during the summer when school was not in session and was mainly a drill for teachers and staff on how to react and help.

Wow! Does this ever cause trauma to the kids? The parents? Just curious...

We haven't received any complaints. I think, with likely some exceptions, the kids assume everything is a "drill." I don't like that attitude but I'm not sure how to change it. We just had a fire drill this morning and everyone had a great time!

Ugh this makes me so sad, I feel sick to my stomach, I hadn't heard of this yet. Sending all my love and prayers from SoCal to the NorCal residents!

Edit: Did not see that this thread was from Nov,

regardless, prayers and love all around.

But Tues in Kentucky and Monday in Texas, so sadly still happening...

Holy moly!! That must be terrifying.

The last lockdown drill we had, they forgot to inform me the lockdown was over. Police are supposed to unlock our doors and give us the all clear. I guess no one thought it was important to let the nurse know so I didn't find out until the janitor unlocked my door to empty my trash. I was just starting to hear people move around in the halls so I suspected I had been forgotten.

My heart hurts thinking of those schools, the victims, and their families.

Is this with kids in school? or just a staff day? Just curious to how parents react to this. We have such high maintenance parents at our school - this type of drill would not sit well with them if it was done when school was in session.

We had "Active shooter training" a few years ago after the Sandy Hook incident - since then we really haven't reviewed what was taught or talked about it.

Isnt that nuts? we try to do something to protect their LDs and it is too much...oye...

We had an active shooter training last year on a staff development day. We're to use ALICE for that. We haven't really gone over it much since then. We do have lockdown drills, but it's just an announcement over the PA.
