Sad that we may need a category for this.

Another school shooting in NoCal.

Thinking of NoCalMimi and hoping she's okay.

LOL

There aren't a lot of places where you can have an open discussion on something like this without it turning into a mud slinging contest.

This is why i am thankful for all of you :)

I couldn't agree more.

I see this current state of affairs much as you do, the result of the moral decay of America. From Al Franken to this Moore fellow in Texas, from the President himself to Weinstein, Spacey, Cosby, Wiener, Bush, Clinton, and all the rest we see wickedness in high places.

When the Prez pardons the arrogant and mean-spirited, minority-hating, Judge-disrespecting Sheriff Joe Arpaio before the guy is even sentenced, there is something very wrong. Just as wrong is not upholding the laws from the very start, decades ago regarding illegal immigrants. And don't think I don't feel for them and for refugees fleeing war and terror. I do. But we either have laws or we don't.

What's wrong is spiritual - a lack of strong religious values that people in power as well as people who are more ordinary everyday people live by.

We have to hold ourselves and each other accountable. We need God (Jesus for me) in our lives, a God we really honor and obey and worship. That will help us rebuild our beloved country. Alas, if you believe Bible prophecy the way it is usually interpreted, it's pretty much too late. That doesn't mean we should quit trying.

Kooky, I'm writing you in on the next election!!

So, I've been rather silent on this thread, but I'm jumping in ::ducks::.

I am a religious person, but I don't think God should be in our laws and government. I respect the separation of church and state. I know, however, others feel differently. We can agree to disagree respectfully.

People do not need God to be polite and good people. Religion is very personal and may be fulfilling for some people, less so for others. But I know several great non-religious people who are respectful, law-abiding citizens.

School shootings make me very sad. Really any mass shooting makes me very sad. I think a person shouldn't be able to acquire so many weapons in such a short time, but when a person is set on doing something, they will try many, many ways to accomplish it, even illegally.

Working in a school has taught me that mental health is important and very ignored, especially at a young age. There are never enough resources. My poor counselor at school is exhausted, I'm exhausted handling the over spill, and even so we both wonder if we are missing the students that really need us as we have to prioritize "crisis" kids and miss the kids that need help to avoid a future crisis. I feel strongly that this what might help long-term for when this kids become adults.

This!!! I was born and raised Catholic (and will probably die one as well) but am very lapsed for a variety of reasons, personal to me and my particular life situations.

I am a good person and I seek the good in others.

Say it again for the people in back!!! :)

Good people exist in all forms of belief. Jewish, Islamic, Christian, Muslim, Atheist, Agnostic, Buddhist, the list is unending. Throughout history, so many terrible acts have been committed in the name of religion. It is NOT an indicator of being a good hearted human.

The real crisis is the mental health shortage, both pediatric and adult. However, the inner crisis is the shift from accountable counseling to the victim entitlement now being propagated by the progressive psychiatrists. I have first hand exposure as a child I took in had an old school counselor who held him accountable for his actions, she retired and his young new counselor tells him his acting out is totally the result of his anger towards his mom with no accountability. He now believes he has no control over his anger and is free to lash out without repercussion. She doesn't correct him when he says this. Wonder how many shooters have this experience with mental health providers before they snap?

Interesting example! I work closely with a counselor that holds all students accountable for their actions and I do the same (as does my school). Sure they can feel the way they feel, but what they choose to do with those feelings may have consequences and they need to be ready to accept them, negative or positive.

Frankly, I'm trying to soak up as much mental health PD as I can.

They are the minority. The local mental health hospital made no mention of the attempted murder he did a year ago to land him there. When asked why, they answered they wanted to focus on the feelings, not the actions. I asked if that would take away his accountability and they said "of course it will, but he needs to have a handle on his feelings before we can ask him to control himself". Wow! I just asked could I sue them if he hurt or killed one of my children when released?

A plan of actions to take when he feels that way are a start and an agreement and willingness to work with that. (And that action can't be murder, duh.) A contract, really, of sorts.

At my school we start there. For example, student constantly leaving class without permission due to anxiety. Okay, anxiety is a problem and student says that classroom is a big trigger. First step, finding a plan for student to alert teacher when they need to leave and find safe place for student to go if this occurs. Teacher alerts certain staff member that student is going to said place. We know where student is and they are safe. Then we try and see why student is doing this through counseling, etc. Yes, feelings are important, but safety is very important.

I understand what should be done, but this is where psychiatry is heading. This is a nationally known hospital with over 150 years of service to the mental health community. Maybe guns aren't the only weapons here.

Interesting thought.

I have a heavy heart as I bump this topic. Texas yesterday, Kentucky today. Not a whole lot of details yet. I feel like it's only a matter of time until body armor is standard issue with a teaching certificate. Stay alert, stay safe, my friends.
