School Shootings

Sad that we may need a category for this.

Another school shooting in NoCal.

Thinking of NoCalMimi and hoping she's okay.

1 person has been confirmed dead in Kentucky. Stay safe indeed, friends.

I. Just. Cant.

What hurts me the most is that everyone is becoming so used to this. I only saw a quick mention of the Texas shooting this morning and the only reason I knew about Kentucky is you guys. I feel like the media should be making a HUGE deal every time this happens because really that's the only way things will change.

I am listening to old podcasts, and in the episode of Still Buffering from June, 2016, right after the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting the teenager in that pod talked about her high school. About the incidents in her school, ALICE drills, the dubious plan of evacuating to a place a student attacker would be able to reach, and about the fact that violence in schools is accepted as a when, not if, scenario. Makes me really upset. Sad, sick, angry, all of these.

I'm a KY girl and this school is just a few hours away. Hubs teaches high school and every time he tells me of an upset kid (over silly things like seating charts) it makes me so nervous for him.

How incredibly sad that our kids (and staff) can't feel safe in school. Just terrible.

It's just awful. I was talking to my SIL this weekend and she said that her kids were actually playing nicely together, so she was listening in and her Kinder was telling his older sisters "Let's play school. You guys be the students and I'll be the bad guy with a gun. You hide under the table or in the closet like they showed us at school"

I really wonder where the insanity is going to end. Boys these days are marginalized in the educational system, just look at college enrollment numbers. Couple this with the proliferation of first person shooter games and isolation and we are where we are now. We did not have these issues before video game companies decided to broach the taboo subject of killing people. Think about it, pre 90's, targets at ranges were animals or circular, human shapes were used for law enforcement and military. Why? Because those shapes deconditioned the shooter to the fact they were killing a human, a necessary skill for survival in those situations. We need to decide if it is worth the risk so others can have entertainment. It is an easier cop out to go after an industry we deep down know won't really be threatened in the gun manufacturers than take away the games.

Wow. This disturbs me so very much.

What are you all doing for emergency preparedness? We will be going to ALICE training.

Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate.

I'm all about evacuating if possible! Im lucky to have 2 entrances to my office area, so I can mobilize in several directions.

We've done ALICE training. The training is intense, it left a lot of teacher shaken, but it does really give you the tools you need.

our school does ALICE training and drills. I have Run, Hide, Fight/Code Silver training through the hospital.

They just teach us run, fight, hide at my school. We used to do drills, but stopped because our local police revealed that a shooter would likely be a student and by doing drills with students, we were making ourselves more vulnerable. So we talk it through at staff meetings only.

Did anyone read/see more about the interactive training using simulators?
