Sad that we may need a category for this.
Another school shooting in NoCal.
Thinking of NoCalMimi and hoping she's okay.
I finally caught up this thread.
And like a few others, I do not believe arming teachers is the answer. My teachers are just that teachers. If they choose to go through the proper channels and conceal carry, and volunteer to carry in school, that is all great for them. But as someone said above, you never know how you will respond to an emergency until you are in it. I know without a doubt, we would not have any volunteers at my particular school to conceal carry. And really they shouldn't have to feel pressure to do so. I don't expect my teachers to put their lives on the line for their students. I don't doubt that 99% of them would, but it shouldn't be an expectation, even if they are conceal carrying.
Right now everyone is so emotionally charged because of the school shooting, but really the problem is so much bigger. Think of the shooting in Las Vegas. The nightclub Florida. Mass shootings can happen ANYWHERE.
What are your thoughts about what the answer would be?
Let's beef up the laws we already have. Have a nation wide background check requirement, with penalties for gun shop owners if it is found out that they aren't doing them correctly. Let's include a question on if they are receiving medical care for a mental health diagnosis. Not to say that someone who is compliant with their treatment should not be able to own a gun, but that an astirk is added next to their name if background checks are done multiple times or state to state. Similar to what pharmacies do with controlled substances when a patient is hopping from pharmacy to pharmacy.
I personally like the ideas of both a gun registry and a limit on the number of firearms you can purchase during a set period of time but I fully understand why people don't like those ideas and I know that will never happen.
And as an aside, I am gun owner. I would rather jump through 20 hoops and make it just that much harder for someone who has intent to harm others to get a gun.

Thank you for your input. I can't think of any enhancement of existing gun laws that would "help." I have no issue with background or mental illness or drug abuse checks but I'm positive that someone, having such a history, and knowing there will be such a background check, will simply circumvent that step and procure a weapon illegally so the bad guy threat is still alive and well.
And, a background check required to purchase a firearm is, in fact, a national registry; which to the angst of 2nd amendment enthusiasts, could also be a government confiscation list.
I like the dialogue but so far I haven't seen anything that convinces me addressing the "gun" will prevent the problem.
Thanks again.
