Teacher appreciation week...

I love teachers. Many of my friends are teachers.

I'm sick of hearing about all of the wonderful activities that we will do for Teacher Appreciation week. Someone even made a joke at the last staff meeting about "having to share the treats with the social workers, office staff and nurse." Um, it's my week, too. Ugh. Sorry, just had to vent.

I think she needs a third child, my wife and I are orphans, can she adopt us?

Trust me, unless you guys are perfect, and I mean PERFECT, you dont wanna be there!

It's in my contract that my lunch break is considered a working lunch. One of the principals found this out and threw a fit and even went so far as to call my supervisor to confirm that I really was paid to take lunch. She said to me, well when I take lunch everyday I sit in the lounge and we discuss work related things, so I should be paid for that?

Come on! Totally not fair. I eat cold lunch every single day. It normally takes me between 1 and 1.5 hours to finish my lunch because of so many interruptions.

I know what you mean. This whole week all I heard was about how great the teachers are (don't get me wrong some are great), our PTA even held a luncheon for the teachers, I was told oh you can come too.

Today during our weekly mass (I'm the school nurse for a private catholic school) they recognized each teacher and gave them a gift and blessing. After that they said also by the way its National Nurses week and today is National School Nurse day. The whole thing seemed more like an after thought than a true appreciation.

Just like the role we have in the school. No gift or blessing for you! The worst part? You got more than 90% of school nurses.

That is truly a shame!

Only if they knew what it was like to be the after thought or 5th wheel!!

So basically I had this issue until I put my foot down and said that's enough. My front office can handle my issues and medications, since they were trained on it, so I asked for an official lunch break, so now I got to lunch from 12:30-1pm, with no issue. No one calls me UNLESS it's an actual emergency, so that's a plus side on this.

I'm not sure how many of you have front office staff who are trained, but is it possible for you guys to do it?

That's what I was about to say. Heck, I would consider myself lucky if I even got to shove anything in my mouth while someone was puking. Im usually handling puke, low blood sugars, anxiety attacks, change of clothes and 15 FF visits at the same time!!!

Sooooo.....confession......I don't mind my "working lunch". Its not in my contract as a working lunch or anything, but we don't "clock in and clock out", so whether I make it a point to take a few minutes for myself or not, I'm getting paid either way. Plus, its waaaaaay more than what I was getting bedside, so its definitely a better gig from that stand point. What did kind of "chap my khakis" was when I was breastfeeding my daughter and NEEDED that time to pump. It was something that my admin assistant just kept forgetting I was doing and kept sending kiddos to my office. But, I really don't mind "snacking" on my lunch for an hour though. Its usually just a sandwich anyways so losing its heat isn't an issue.

In regards to teacher appreciation week though, I'm a little irked that its the same as Nurse Week. I'm not sure if its always been this way, but when you compare Nurses to Teachers, the vast majority are always going to flock towards teachers for one reason or another. Its just not fair that our week was overshadowed by Teacher Appreciation Week. I mean, I was included in all of the goodies this week which was really great, but its kind of like birthday cake. Everyone at the party gets birthday cake, but its truly only special for the birthday girl/boy! Now, I don't mean that appreciation can only be shown through gifts and goodies and big shindigs. I would have gladly settled for "Thank you for being our Nurse! We truly appreciate all that you do for us!" But alas, we stood no chance!

Perhaps all the school nurses should have taken a weeks vacation May 6-10.... I bet they would have appreciated us then! ?

Right? What is up with this? Like people think that medical subjects are the only ones that we can relate to? Sit down to lunch so a teacher's aide I met once can tell me about his father's cancer treatment?

... I'm actually a pretty nuanced human who cares about more than just medical things and bodily fluids...

We should sit with the teachers and start talking to them about lesson plans and various ways they could teach or maybe get them to explain core math so that I can understand it! ?

I'm a total introvert and I feel awkward when people "celebrate" me, so it doesn't bother me at all. I'm sure they'll announce something or do something tomorrow for me and I'll just sink and try to hide in my chair ?

Am I the only weirdo who feels this way?
