My good ol friend mister louse showed up on a kiddo today. Policy followed. Call, send home. No problem!!

Then THE CALL!!!!

"Umm, mam I am so and so step father and I don't see anything but dandruff in her hair."

-Sir, I located more than one live louse on her head.

"Well I have looked and I didn't see anything. I know what I am looking for I am a medical professional!!!" I am a nurse!

-Well sir, SO am I and I know that she has lice. I will be happy to check her in the morning before school. Thank you!

what a lucky, lucky kid! Gets out of school for the day and, most likely, gets to hear all about what an idiot the school nurse is. Don't forget that they will most likely crop up again with this kid sense mom and step-dad won't treat d/t LD not having lice.

Before I was an elementary nurse, an elementary nurse taught me a trick...put louse on scotch tape. Tape to white paper. Send love note home.

I was just going to write the above - I ALWAYS try to get one of those buggers on scotch tape. Or at least some nits on strands of hair.

Usually parents are like "ew I don't want that," but I present it in a "this is what you're looking for at home when rechecking and in the future during your weekly checks as an elementary aged parent." Education and Proof all wrapped into one!

I do the same. When the parent comes to pick the student up I give them the tape with bug, point out in the hair the nits and try to dig a little to find an actual live bug. You would be surprised at how many times I hear "I thought that was dirt, dandruff, etc etc etc".

Found this little bugger last week! Made a scotch tape slide and borrowed a microscope from the science teacher to check it out. It was tiny! Been dealing with this issue for over a month now. I had been asking if they were combing daily at home. They didn't realize I meant with a nit comb. :banghead:

Oh lord. I hate lice. Parents are butts when it comes to it.

I was a nurse for a quarter century before I saw a louse. I was fascinated, and ignorant of all the facts this board has enlightened me to. This step dad being a nurse is like an electrician saying he knows how an LED TV functions, they can be mutually exclusive.

My district RN told me during my first week last year. If you can catch it, put it between tape and give it to the parents, I laughed at first, but trust me it stalls the argument when you hand them a live louse in tape (ok it may be dead, but I tell them it's alive. No one has ever checked that closely).

Better yet, put it in a baggy, so the parent can see it crawling around!
