After telling somebody that I was excited to be getting my lpn school uniform, I was told that LPN meant Little Pretend Nurse. this made me sad, I have worked Very hard to get where I am, I have taken ALL of my prerequisites for the RN program as well but I have chosen this path. Didn't make for a great day
The best way to treat ignorant jerks is to NOT dignify their remarks by responding. Just simply stand tall, turn and walk away. You will meet many such jerks along lifes' journey, and the best gift you can give yourself is to ignore them. Stand tall and proud!
I wish you every success in your career.

Just keep your chin up. You are going to hear stuff like that all through this profession. Some of these doctors need to constantly feed their egos. There must be something missing in their lives if they feel they have to put someone else down. Yesterday, while charting, a doctor (he really thinks he is god) asked me to get out of a chair so he could sit down. I could not believe it. I thought that happened back in the 60's. I just looked at him and rolled my eyes. What a moron!
One of the most outstanding nurse anesthetists in the country, Linda Callahan, started as an LPN, went on to get her RN, become a CRNA, get two masters degrees and a PhD. She teaches at a prominent university, does genetic research and manages to still do clinical anesthesia. She also is a past president of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. She never forgets her start as an LPN and often said that was when she was able to do her most rewarding patient care.
She could be a role model for you and other LPNs. Just do the best you can for your patients and you can sleep better at night than the ones who are ignorant and petty.
Good luck.
I, too, am sorry that you had to hear such a derogatory comment! About a year after getting my LPN, I worked at a mental hospital and was referred to as "Little Play Nurse" since "RN means 'real nurse'". Now, I just CAN'T keep my mouth shut when faced with such stupidity so.....I smiled through my anger and said :"Gee, I went through nursing school and passed the boards so I AM a nurse and by the way also have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology so am well educated!" and walked away. Having had my say, I knew I probably played right into that person's hands, but I got off my retort and was happier for it!!!!!!

*hugs* I've met people who think I'm selling myself short for wanting to do CNA, then LPN, then ADN / RN, instead of BSN. It doesn't follow. The LPNs at my mother's workplace are some of the nicest and most dedicated people I've met.
I second the Pretentious Asshat. What on earth is a PA anyway?
