RN Starbucks side job?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I've been a nurse for 3 years and love my job, but only working 3 shifts a week, I find myself with a lot of free time. In college I worked at Starbucks and absolutely loved it, and kind of miss it to be honest. Would it be absolutely insane to get a part time at Starbucks not for the money but for my own enjoyment/sanity?

Specializes in SICU, trauma, neuro.

A while back, the cashier who checked me out at Wal Mart was an RN. She'd been at Wal Mart for years and enjoyed, and kept it as a lower stress side job.

Nothing at all wrong w/ honest work, even if you are "overqualified." :)

I've met a few nurses that strip for fast cash (honest truth), not that I frequent those places but I work with some that will talk about it. It's all hush hush as you can imagine what would happen if the hospital found out.

I found a co-worker on backpages and it isn't too hard to make it happen discreetly.

Step 1: delete all of your social media

Step 2: never wear make-up at work

Step 3: use a fake alias and use a ton of make-up and cosmetics on your ad

No one will be able to tell the difference. Except for me.

It's all that time he saves by not doing ADLs. Also, you shouldn't play Candy Crush at the Nurses station, so he has to find SOMETHING to make himself look productive lol.

(You know I loves ya, NO)

Whenever I am at the nursing station, I am actually doing work.

When I lose all of my lives in candycrush and waiting for them to respawn, I got some time to kill. Backpages is very entertaining place.

What is this Backpages you all speak of?

Essentially escort/prostitute services at least in this context. In other contexts it's a lot like craigslist.

I am in the military reserves so that is MORE than a part time job, but I have toyed with working at Best Buy/Gamestop or a sporting goods store for the change of pace and discounts.

Specializes in Outpatient Psychiatry.

Just because you're a nurse you don't have to keep doing nursing work. When I first became a RN, after previous degrees and a career change, I continued to moonlight doing contract work in my previous profession (totally not healthcare related). Actually, I kept that affiliation for about two years. I never found general nursing very fulfilling to be honest but entered it to be a NP. That being said, I think Starbucks is a great idea especially if you like it.

And save a mocha frappuccino for me!

Specializes in Med-Surg; Infectious Diseases; Research.

Go for it! We all need an outlet. The flexibility with our schedules is one reason we are envied by other professions. Enjoy!

Specializes in public health, women's health, reproductive health.

I'd do it if I had a set schedule that would allow me to have another steady part time job. I do know my schedule about a month of so in advance, but I think it would still be tricky to arrange things. Still, I think I would actually benefit from having a low stress second job that I enjoyed! I say go for it!

Been a flight attendant for 20 years, been an RN since 2009, and just finished NP school in Dec. Still fly and nurse PRN. When I get sick of one job, I do the other. I rotate every week. Tomorrow I am going to Hong Kong.
