recording classes?

I've seen it mentioned that some of you record class lectures to refer back to later, what do you use to record these? I would want it digital if I can, do you use a type of recorder, or a program on your laptop or phone? Can you let me know what you use?

thanks

First make sure recording lectures is permitted. Some instructors and schools do not give permission to record especially if sensitive information is shared such as in nursing classes.

I've used a small hand held digital recorder that I can download to my PC and save as an mp3 or mp4. More recently used an app on my smart phone.

I agree with the previous poster - at least at my school they took it very seriously when a student would record without the instructors permission. Ensure you have their ongoing consent (why not make it informed, just to make it even more nurse-y :p) or else you could see yourself in a pickle!

I've seen people use small recording devices that the instructor allowed on their podium or desk at the front of the room to get a good sound.

I use my phone or tablet.

Always ask your instructor. There are always a few who aren't comfortable with it.

I have always used my iPhone, and it's been fine.

thanks everyone, I will def ask before recording, but wanted ideas so I am prepared t record once I get consent. :)

Stand alone Digital recorders offer worthwhile conveniences over other devices. No need to buy the most expensive model.

Noting the Filename and time position on PowerPoint notes for info you don't understand or want to refer back to is helpful. You will not do this otherwise.

You may find that you have an assignment or test study guide where the specific information can not be found from the book, PowerPoint, or internet, yet it is right there on your recorder waiting to be heard.

I always use the voice record app on my iphone (if my teacher permits!).

I have never felt the need in the past but my current A&P instructor goes very fast and does not post slides or anything to ease the note taking load, so if you don't get it all down, too bad. So I do record that course. I find it helpful to go through, retype my notes while listening for any holes in my notes. I also write down descriptions of the figures he puts up so that I can try to find similar figures online to put into my notes. Going through that helps cement things in my mind and keep my notes organized- some tests I've done well on I didn't even really study past just retyping and relistening. I haven't ever bothered for other courses though.

I use the Easy Voice Recorder app for android. It does very well. I don't really see how a specific device could get better sound quality, and it's free!

Hello @Guy in Babyland,

Are the batteries rechargable

In classes where you have the OK to go ahead and record, just use an app on your phone. I recorded a couple of my micro lectures with my phone from the back couple rows of a 200 person capacity lecture hall, and they still turned out to be good recordings. Just make sure you know where the microphone on your phone is and make sure you don't cover it up (I did that more than once... Oops).
