Please take a moment to learn about your patient. I had to give that advice to the RN caring for my very educated pharmacist father in law. Don't speak to the man like he is a moron. If she had read anything on the computer she would have known that. He doesn't require special education style discussions on his medications.

What happened to looking at the chart. EVERY hospital I ahve worked at or been admitted to has stated...Occupation. When they admit you the admissions person...do you work? or Are you employed? Where do you work who carries your insurance.

Seriously....LOOK at the record.

ANYONE who says "make your poopy squishy" is floated from peds or an idiot.

I have to tell you this is what I find so offensive about hospitals today....the total lack of respect given to the patient and the assumption that everyone is inferior and need to be treated like a moron. If I see one more gum smacking, eye rolling, lip smacking, shoulder shrugging health care professional I am going to blow a gasket!!!!

Remember that underneath that patient exterior lies a human being. Who is loved by someone. They are someone's mother, brother sister mother Aunt.....that they deserve respect and treat them accordingly. While they might not be Einstien, The Queen of England or Bill Gates they are NO LESS deserving or the same respect and dignity.

Thank you Esme! I knew I couldn't be the only person to have ever worked in a facility that does indeed provide that background information. I have never spoken to anyone including my children that way. It's just ridiculous!

"Colace is to make your poopy squishy so it doesn't hurt your heiney"

Oh no she didn't! I think my pediatric patients would find that cringe-worthy!

Every now and then something really gets under my skin and I get REALLY annoyed...due to an auto immune disorder I am unfortunately a frequent patient these days and it really gets under my skin.

Just because the chart is on the computer LOOK AT IT for heavens sake...get to KNOW your patient.

When my Dad was hospitalized before he died I had a dialysis tech running her mouth off at the bedside I about tossed her out the door when she said "I wouldn't wish this disease on my worst enemy" grant it my Dad was pretty obtunded at this time and confused but REALLY???? Your worst enemy??? My Dad was a member of MENSA he walked and talked until he got a kidney infection when he quickly deteriorated to ATN coded and passed away. (after he couldn't have dialysis because the tech torked his vas cath and fractured it on a weekend....another thread sigh)

I had more than a few choice professional words and suggestions for this young lady and keeping her mouth SHUT at the patients bedside.

I find it offensive as a Peds nurse...I have NEVER spoke to any of pts like that regardless of developmental challenges or none...it's safe to say my Peds pts would cringe as well, and/or have a comeback worthy of their precociousness... :cheeky:

The HMO I belong to does keep this info in the medical chart where the provider can read it. I remember being surprised when the doctor I hadn't told mentioned my prior occupation to me at a visit. He said, "it's in our notes."

Even if you don't know the patient's education level, how about talking to adults like adults? Unless you have evidence of cognitive or intellectual impairment. And even then, show respect. And respect for children as well.

I used to be flabbergasted that hospitals wanted to make their employees use scripted statements to patients. I thought "Whatever happened to basic interpersonal skills?" Apparently, lots of people don't have any.

In this nurses case, a script WAS necessary...

I don't need to know anyone's occupation/background to not speak to them in that manner.

"Colace is to make your poopy squishy so it doesn't hurt your heiney"

Seriously,Who says this?????? I wouldn't even say that to a 5 year old.

WoW.

They didn't even take his BS until I pointed out he is diabetic. The RN took the BS then 5 different "team" members all came in and asked what it was. I told them since the EMR must be for decoration. So not impressed and I had a discussion with the physician about that. We are not talking about a patient with dementia. It's pretty safe to say a 60 yr old A&Ox4 pharmacist doesn't need you to tell him "Colace is to make your poopy squishy so it doesn't hurt your heiney". That is insulting to anyone not on a Peds unit.

That's what they really said?! --- Gross!
