Random Thoughts about School Nursing not juicy enough for their own topic start here!
My mantra lately: "Wash your HANDS, go back to CLASS and cover your COUGH!"
"Can you give me something for the novocaine I just got at the dentist? I keep biting my tongue."
Me: "When did you get back from the dentist?"
Me: "No. I do not have magic powers that make novocaine wear off quicker."
"What about ibuprofen?"
Me: "I'm a huge fan of ibuprofen, but that's not going to help you"
"But I'm swollen"
Me: "No you're not, it just feels that way from the Novocaine."
"Are you SURE ibuprofen won't help?"
Me: "You're fine, go back to class."
Mutters as he walks out the door "I'm never going to the dentist again..."
It's the conversations like this that make my day...

Not a school nurse, but this is one of my favorite threads (hi, Far 😎).
This story brought back memories. My daughter was in first grade and had some dental work done. Wound up with a lip full of Novocaine. Went to school as soon as she was done at the dentist (hey, she's a nurse's kid, she knew the rules lol).
Apparently, the numb feeling in her lip was intriguing, and she had fun playing with it. Actually, what she did was chew the Hell out of her lip. She looked like someone had punched her in the mouth.
When I picked her up at the end of the day, the librarian was standing next to her, asking not-so-veiled-questions about why she looked the way she did.
I explained, and we went home. She said "I kept telling her what happened, but she didn't believe me!"
I actually wasn't that upset-even though she was thisclose to calling DCFS. Better than something actually being wrong and no one even wondering.
I know I've been a school nurse for a while when I realize that the smell of vomit does not bother me...Now diarrhea? That one will always bother me. (Speaking of which - where did the poop icon go??)
Don't usually have a problem with bodily fluids, except for that one day during clinicals...C-Diff diarrhea...in the steamy hot shower. **making the eeeek face**
