Question re: masks/lockdowns effectiveness and super spread events

Published

I want to preface my post by saying I am NOT looking to get into a political debate/argument about right wingers/left wingers or any wingers..I am seriously wanting opinions about how to answer these questions as I am having these or similar questions asked of me and I honestly am not sure how to respond other that citing CDC/FDA information.

First, if masks/lockdowns are as effective as some would have people believe, what are places like California and NY, where some of the strictest mask/lockdown restriction were/are, in place having such terrible times with the virus much more than other places that had little or no mask/lockdown requirements?

Secondly, some political and/or social events/protests have been deemed "super spreader" while others have been ignored by experts. It seems those most criticized were Republican/Republican leaning while those ignored/excused were Democratic/Democratic leaning.

Again, I am not looking for political/social arguments, just a way to better answer the questions when asked than I am doing now.

Thanks

There are things we can do, but the trajectory will not change for several months. It will take time, masks, social distancing, etc., and a whole lot of vaccine. But there is hope.

You mean, the things we are already doing before Biden was elected?

Dude, you are amazing! 400k+ dead and you still feel we should have continued on in the same vein?

Sooner or later you will realize just how different you are in your perspectives. I just hope that it's not too late for you or the people around you. I just hope that they have the sense to watch you carefully.

I still after all these years in Psych don't understand people like you. Mental illness I do, but functioning people like you, I don't. I have to carefully analyze my situations and responses because I know that there are consequences for myself and loved ones, if I get it wrong. And, then there are people like you that just don't seem to care about consequences or oblivious.

I did a 3 months assignment in the prison system once. Never again, as much as I found them fascinating. Their logic and defense mechanisms were astounding in supporting their choices.

Just fascinating what's going on in your responses.

Biden says nothing can change the trajectory of the Covid pandemic over the next several months

  • President Joe Biden has painted a bleak picture of the nation's coronavirus outbreak in his first few days in office.
  • During a Friday press briefing, Biden said that Covid-19 deaths are expected to reach "well over 600,000."
  • The president also warned that "there's nothing we can do to change the trajectory of the pandemic in the next several months."

President Joe Biden has painted a bleak picture of the nation's coronavirus outbreak in his first few days in office, warning that it will take months to turn around the pandemic's trajectory and that fatalities are expected to dramatically rise over the next few weeks…

…   "A lot of America is hurting. The virus is surging. We're 400,000 dead expected to reach well over 600,000,"…

========================================

As of January 22, California has 3,062,068 confirmed cases of COVID-19, resulting in 35,768 deaths. The number of COVID-related deaths increased by 2.2 percent from the prior day total of 35,004. 23,024 tested positive just today. 764 COVID-19 patients died in our state today. Hospitals are overflowing today with patients cred for in tents, gift shops, lobbies, cafeterias, and ambulances waiting for a bed.

Seems to me IF people most of us do what we should it MAY get better. If not ? what do you think?

My husband got his first Moderna vaccination today. He has an appointment for the second February, 19th. Then, God willing, he may have some immunity weeks later.

We are continuing on in the same vein.  Masks, social distancing,  1 million vaccinations a day, etc.

It's Biden, not me, who is saying there isn't anything more we can do.

Dude, engage the critical thinking! Do you really think that Biden actually knows more about biology or covid than you? His skill set is leadership and politics. He appoints the right people to run his various depts and steps out of the way. Now if Fauci made that statement, then we should all worry.

His chief of staff is probably the brain but then he brings the Obamas and the Clintons to the table. Whatever you may think, they weild serious gray cells between them.

However he's impressed me so far and I actually thought he'd just be a figurehead. Maybe the old coot has a lot more going for him than we know.

I just wonder if he's actually as nice as he appears to be. I think he's actually quite steely and tough under the wrinkles. He's going to surprise a lot of people, especially with that statement he made to the young staff members.

Its just DAY 2 of Biden Administration,  That's not how I'm interpreting Biden's statement.: "There's nothing we can do to change the trajectory of the pandemic in the next several months"

It will take MORE TIME to gear up vaccine supply + syringe mfg,  get more people onboard wearing mask and social distancing, increase immunization rate to be able to decrease  COVID infection rates and deaths.

Fauci says lack of candor from Trump administration 'very likely' cost lives

,,,"Clearly, no excuses. We should have gotten 20 distributed, and 20 into the arms of people -- by 20, I mean 20 million," Fauci, the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told the Economic Club of Washington.

"I think we have to wait for the first couple of weeks in January to make any determination as to what's gone wrong, if anything," Fauci said...

Gonna take some time to review whats going on with current COVID vaccination rollout, improve testing availability and make effective changes --- then you will see the MORE Biden team doing  to improve COVID situation.

Beerman, what do you think can be added to the current COVID-19 pandemic response to stop this pandemic?

It's kind of funny to observe Trump supporters struggle to understand straightforward and honest talk about the covid pandemic.  LOL

We are already masking and social distancing.  Been doing it for several months, coming up on a year soon.  I've traveled to different parts of the country.  Some areas are better then others, but people are for the most part masking.  So "100 days of masking", masking on planes. Federal property, etc. is good soundbites for those holed up in their homes, but those of us who leave their home frequently know those things are already happening. And, a recent survey supports my anecdotal observations in that 90% say they wear masks almost always when out of their home.  We've had mask mandates where I am since at least May.

I've heard some places have long testing lines.   At the same time, I've driven by sites where there is no line or a short line.  I used to see long lines here, but not anymore.  I've been tested twice.  Once by appointment and once by a home kit.

I work for a covid testing company that provides testing for employees of companies,  such as food suppliers.  Those employees can get a test whenever they want with seldom any waiting.

I'm not sure what can be added.  Things could always be better, and things such as testing have gotten and are continuing to get better.  But people wearing masks, social distancing, we're already at the goal Biden wanted of 1 million doses a day to be administered (1.6 million were on inauguration day).

I think the highest priority challenges right now is getting people to take the vaccine and continue to ramp up ways for people to get it quickly.

Everyone could provide their anecdotal experience. The reality is that not enough Americans practiced social distancing and masking to save us from the worst covid experience on the face of the planet. We couldn't do it.  There are too many people who were and are poorly compliant.  The numbers don't lie.

Many people will be similarly uninterested in vaccination as vaccine misinformation is common among Trump supporters. Educating the general public will be difficult with contradictory conservative messaging bouncing around in their media bubble.

There must be accountability and we must never forget how we got here, IMHO

I'm exhausted. It's time to prioritize getting past this pandemic. But some lessons need to be learned and imprinted from these recent events and experiences.

This country needs to be united around truth, proper accountability, and justice for all.

I wholeheartedly agree. I will never forget nor should any of us. There will be no accountability on the parts of those who lacked leadership and helped get us here. But we must hold ourselves accountable to never forget it ourselves.

I read it in a magazine in 1980. I was an LVN working in ICU, taking prerequisites, attending PTA and other school events at my highschool kid's school, and, of course reading SF. Decades before that my musician Dad played in the band at a science fiction convention in San Jose. We got to hear Asimov and Harlan Ellison argue! While Dad played music I went to the hotel coffee shop and ordered a scoop of ice cream. Isaac Asimov then sat in the booth behind me! I didn't have the nerve at age 17 to turn around and meet him. Years later someone who knew him told me he enjoyed reciting limericks for young girls and women.

From childhood on I read as much Asimov as I could find. His paperback "The Human Body" had most of when was known about anatomy and physiology in the 1950s. It is funny, full of word play.
