PVT: Question of Character?

Published

Okay, I fully expect to be slammed for this. What do all these posts about gaming the system to get early results say about the character of some of the new grads/nurse candidates? One of the prime requisites of being a nurse is good judgement. Boasting about or encouraging fraudulent behavior by using inaccurate or inadequate credit card information to get test results hours or days quicker does not speak well of one's judgement and maturity. Is this what we accept from our colleagues?

It may be harsh but I think this is a matter of integrity. I understand impatience very well, I understand wanting to know if all the work of school paid off, what I don't understand is how easily one can ignore the lessons of integrity and professionalism.

If one can lie to a faceless testing company how one respond when faced with a potential life threatening situation that requires, patience, integrity, and maturity. It's a slippery slope, a little harmless deception here may reveal character issues that come to light when real harm may be caused.

So, slam me, flame me, whatever, or I hope some will agree with me.

I can't play poker, either.

I always have to keep a little cheat sheet of what hand beats what (full house of 4 of a kind?). Kinda diminishes my ability to actually win money.

Anyway, I personally have a difficult time getting all that upset about people who use the PVT. From a legal sense, using a "dummy" card may not be fraud as it would be difficult to show the PV is "hurt." Even if they are harmed, it would be negligible. The integrity argument? I'm not thrilled by the practice, but using the PVT does put one on the level with child abusers, wall street bankers, etc.

Also, instant gratification does not affect someone's ability to provide top notch care, but there is no trick that I am aware of on hospital websites that allow you to see how an interview went right after you walk out the NM's office.

Yes .

I can't really see how to have a valid discussion on this topic then

I don't understand how some people seem to think that knowingly avoiding payment for a service is acceptable?

If someone knowingly enters fraudulent credit card information I would also wonder what else they would consider.

Well, you'll be pleased to know then that many posters here aren't nurses at all, so calling NURSES harsh judges seems a bit, well, harsh. YOU posted here as a non-nurse, no?

You know, I didn't realize internet nurses were such harsh judges of character. I'm so glad these are opinions of online personas and have no impact on my real life whatsoever. I would like to believe that in real life y'all aren't this judgemental. So salty.

There are some new grad posters on AN who truly make me blanche. For many reasons.

Assessments they didn't actually complete because it's not going to hurt anybody. Signing out a med, getting busy, and then finding it in their pocket when they get home and doing....nothing because its just one dose. Lying in report because nursing is 24 hours anyway. Being late because it won't kill the nurse on duty to wait a few minutes for them to arrive etc...

I don't get why there's so much self righteousness. Do you not shop at Walmart, do you refuse to eat meat, do you not use anything manufactured in China? All of these are lot more "dishonorable" then using a gift card with a low fund.

It's not self righteousness. If people want to try the PVT, then they should be entering their own VALID credit card information and risk the charge. There is nothing wrong with that.

However, when people knowingly enter false credit card information for any type of service, well some of us have a problem with that. Be honest about what you're doing.

It's no more illegal to enter a fake credit card into PV's website and get an error than it is to enter a fake credit card into Amazon and get an error. People keep calling it fraud, but it's not. It's absolutely legal.

Of course, something can be both legal and immoral (cheating on your spouse is legal, for instance). I, personally, don't see the moral issue, but I tend to be a pragmatist. My morals tend to focus on things like not harming people, and making life better for people, rather than worrying whether I was honest to an inanimate website.* I once told my car I love it, when in all honesty I like it more as a friend, but I don't feel bad about that, either.

The argument, made by someone earlier, that it harms PV because if you had used a real CC#, then you would be charged $200 doesn't mean much to me... the reason people use fake CC#s is because they don't want to spend $200. If there were no way around it, people just wouldn't do the PVT, and the net result would be the same (no money for PV). Again, you could claim it's wrong to waste server power or whatever, but that argument would make it wrong to browse Amazon unless you intended to buy something. If the end result of two options is the same (no money for PV), and one of them is better (more info for test takers), that doesn't seem wrong... it seems smart.

* Which is why the "if you would do the PVT you would do all sorts of horrible things and shouldn't be a nurse" doesn't hold water. It's a false analogy.
