President Biden thread

Published

Wow.  No one has started such a thread yet?

After promising that most K-8 students would be in schools in the first 100 days,  apparently Joe is afraid to lead on this and has drastically scaled back that goal.

Instead, we're shooting for about half to go to school at least one day a week,  by the end of April.

Yep, deflection.  My fault though for opening the door to it.

Any thoughts on Biden using the example of the WNBA to promote the women aren't paid their fair share narrative?

Sure. It's a high profile example of inequity that involves celebration of women rather than demeaning of men.  Biden runs a positive campaign.

I think given the NBA men do bring in more money than the woman, it wasn't the perfect example. What does it hurt to point out the inequities that exist in so many other places? Look at the difference in viewership for the two  championships? Despite being held mid afternoon, the women final had more viewers than the mens, which was held prime time. https://www.wsj.com/business/media/the-womens-ncaa-tournament-outshone-the-mens-but-it-got-99-less-tv-money-74806707 Go Huskies!!

@NutmeggeRN

One loses credibility when they use a false analogy when trying to bolster an argument.  His statement did nothing to back up the narrative of women not making their fair share.  And only gave ammunition to those who say it's a false narrative.

And, as a whole, ratings for the men's tournament crushed the women's.   For example, for the first two rounds (48 games), mens games averaged 9 million viewers.  Womens about 900,000, including Iowa's 3 million for each of their two games.

I mentioned the championship game was a anomaly.  I'd bet a paycheck the men's game will rate higher next year.

Yep, I was triggered.

With the example presented by Karen above was that they get 10% vs. 50% of revenue, it's a discussion I think that needs to happen and it's worth pointing out.  Everyone can agree that men's sports crush women's sports in the financial department and that females shouldn't be paid the same.  They themselves have said that.

I also think that there is data out there about income inequality although studies about that gap are all over the place.  I do think that it's getting better, and with women starting to out number and out performing men in higher education it's going to narrow,  In some fields like medicine (I'm pretty sure all of our interns are making the same, and established MDs are reimbursed at the same pay)  it already might have been closed.

So I'm not going to buy into the idea that he's promoting a false narrative, although I will agree it's campaigning rhetoric to woo the female vote.

I think what's happening about the discussion about inequality and "promoting a false narrative" is that sometimes things get a little murky and politicians are going to spin it to their advantage.  For example "female athletes don't make as much as the male counterparts in the same sport", isn't a false narrative.  It's truth but obviously you have to dig deeper.

We see this in how Biden and Trump are promoting the economy, leaving out the deep dive.

Deep dive campaigns are snooze fests. That's the fodder of podcasts where a few policy nerds get in front of their cameras and do the deep dive analysis.  IMHO.

Biden has a net positive record to run on.  Biden, himself is a pragmatic optimist. He's been shaking hands and asking for people's votes for a long time with a proven track record of wins.  I think Biden's campaign reflects his civility and focus on putting us together as people with common goals and expectations from government.

I fully expect Biden to keep meeting with union members and everyday American workers to reassure them that he is on their side.  I expect he will continue to visit places to celebrate infrastructure projects that have real positive for people and communities.

Biden basically said to our female athletes "I see you". Biden chose to elevate their inequity with his voice.  For a rich old white catholic man, Biden is surprisingly progressive in his social policy.  IMV

It doesn't take much of a deep dive to understand that it was covid, and not necessarily Trump that left the economy with such bad numbers and the recovery from covid that gave Biden a jump, rather than "Biden created so much more jobs than Trump who left the economy with deep unemployment".  In my opinion.

But it takes a deep dive for the public to understand that it wasn't covid alone.  It was covid combined with a disastrous pandemic response from Trump and his hand picked team that cost our economy and people so dearly.  Trump's lack of effective leadership during the most significant crisis of his presidency was embarrassing and terribly expensive.

It was a sentence I didn't need to make.  I often edit my responses.  It's not you, but if I put too much detail and stray a hair away from the point I'm making, it's often used for some to make deflecting comments.

The women making only 10% of the revenue is due to their last collective bargaining agreement.  And, that's what it took for their league to survive at the time, and the deal was celebrated.

The discussion will happen, and they'll make more next time.

The false narrative isn't that women make less.  It's that they make less because of simply they are treated unfairly.  The deep dive of Biden's comment, although not really deep, shows us the disparity of pay in women's professional sports isn't due to them being treated unfairly,  It's that they bring in far less revenue.   Likewise, if Jake Owen and Taylor Swift are performing at the same concert,  does anyone here think the male performer is going to take home the bigger piece of the pie?

Biden, or more likely his staff, didn't take the time to understand any of this.  More accurately, they didn't care to take the deep dive.  As you said, it was campaign rhetoric.

What does he see?  There is no evidence that there is gender a inequality issue here.

I know this is ancient history, but wasn't the Trump economy starting to decline just before the pandemic hit?
