President Biden thread

Published

Wow.  No one has started such a thread yet?

After promising that most K-8 students would be in schools in the first 100 days,  apparently Joe is afraid to lead on this and has drastically scaled back that goal.

Instead, we're shooting for about half to go to school at least one day a week,  by the end of April.

What does he see?  There is no evidence that there is gender a inequality issue here.

That's your perspective.  From my perspective it's just another example of the "conservative" side of our social and political discourse making a big deal out of a social issue that involves women or people marginalized in our society.  Conservatives waste too much time clutching their pearls over something compassionate said by Biden about female athletes, while their politicians lie about election integrity and spread Russian propaganda when they aren't trying to take reproductive rights from women.

Right wing media sites do a good job of filling their content with distractions and deflections and deceit.

Remember back in the day when conservative posters here argued that racism doesn't exist because Obama?

Totally OT: who is fooling around with the site? Notifications are useless and the quote function is gone.

But it takes a deep dive for the public to understand that it wasn't covid alone.  It was covid combined with a disastrous pandemic response from Trump and his hand picked team that cost our economy and people so dearly.  Trump's lack of effective leadership during the most significant crisis of his presidency was embarrassing and terribly expensive.

Exactly.   Trump caused us to come out of Covid worst then we had to.  Just a simple PSA of him encouraging people to take the vaccine woukd have made a huge difference in our lack of experienced hospital staff who  spoke with their feet.

I know this is ancient history, but wasn't the Trump economy starting to decline just before the pandemic hit?

The economy always had ups and down but my understanding it was doing well under Trump until covid.  "The economy was on solid footing in February 2020. It had been growing since mid-2009 and the huge job losses from the 2007-2009 Great Recession had been erased by 2014. The economic expansion continued into 2020, becoming the longest expansion on record before ending abruptly in the COVID-19 pandemic."

We have discussed how Trump inherited a good economy but he didn't seem to worsen it.

It was a sentence I didn't need to make.  I often edit my responses.  It's not you, but if I put too much detail and stray a hair away from the point I'm making, it's often used for some to make deflecting comments.

The women making only 10% of the revenue is due to their last collective bargaining agreement.  And, that's what it took for their league to survive at the time, and the deal was celebrated.

The discussion will happen, and they'll make more next time.

The false narrative isn't that women make less.  It's that they make less because of simply they are treated unfairly.  The deep dive of Biden's comment, although not really deep, shows us the disparity of pay in women's professional sports isn't due to them being treated unfairly,  It's that they bring in far less revenue.   Likewise, if Jake Owen and Taylor Swift are performing at the same concert,  does anyone here think the male performer is going to take home the bigger piece of the pie?

Biden, or more likely his staff, didn't take the time to understand any of this.  More accurately, they didn't care to take the deep dive.  As you said, it was campaign rhetoric.

Fair enough and I'll drop it, but Biden's camp didn't make up the idea that the female players are not happy with the 10%.  This is coming from their camp, whether it was something they agreed to or not.

Well, it seems we came out of covid gangbusters.  The economy was doing so well there were millions of unfilled jobs that couldn't be filled, supply could not meet demand and we got inflation, so not sure what you're saying here.

Perhaps it not the "conservative" side exploiting historical grievances and seeing women and marginalized people as need of democrat virtue peddling?

I took it to mean that because of Trump Americans ignored mitigation recommendations and more people got sick and died than might have had he modeled good civic behavior with masks and social distancing.

Perhaps not.  You might offer some evidence to support your opinion. In the absence of some supporting evidence I'll mention that the GOP is currently the party of grievances and virtue peddling.  I mean, who is better known for peddling virtues than the religious right that is so devoted to Trump? Isn't it always inspiring to have women like MTG and Boebert speaking to the public from a church dias? And who has more grievances than Trump and his Republicans? They complain about lots of things but seem to be hard pressed to actually do anything about the things.

I guess the the religious peddlers are annoying good point. I wonder if they really believe what they virtue peddling or if they use ijus5 exploit it? Or do not really believe it and just peddle to exploit people for votes?

It's sure more effective to call everyone and anyone racist, homophobic etc...... than to call people bad Christians!

Yes. MTG and Boebert. I wonder if their loyalty is as Strongs as the women of the squad when it comes to supporting a know terrorist group? Hmmmm. Terrorism vs Jesus. ... tough call indeed!

Ughhh. Insufferable politicians.

True.  But why is Biden's camp bothering to even talking about it?

It's not a mystery to me.

I believe that I already gave my opinion that it was to woo the female voters his way so I guess you missed it.  I don't think he was just talking about basketball players in talking about wage equality for our daughters, etc..   I've read studies that females have out registered males and vote in greater numbers and it's a voting block he needs to continue to stay strong with, particularly women of color who may feel a wage and/or race gap more acutely.

I've also read of a gender gap where Biden is holding a decent lead over Trump with female voters.  Is it any wonder he's even talking about it?

I did get it, and agree with all that.

I don't really remember where I was going with that when I posted.
