President Biden thread

Published

Wow.  No one has started such a thread yet?

After promising that most K-8 students would be in schools in the first 100 days,  apparently Joe is afraid to lead on this and has drastically scaled back that goal.

Instead, we're shooting for about half to go to school at least one day a week,  by the end of April.

If Trump made such a proclamation, was applauded for it, and then when asked about seems to know nothing of it, I would think the sentiment was insincere and the applause undeserved.  So, yes.  Same standard would apply.

Nah. Right wing spin is not equitable.  Everyone knows that.

The NBA brings in about $10 billion a year in revenue.  The WNBA  about $200 million.

It's unclear to me if he is simply that dim, or if this is just another avenue of campaigning on victimhood of certain demographics.  In this case women.

"Ms. Clark's salary will be far less than that of her male counterparts. Mr. Biden, writing on X on Tuesday, said that for all their accomplishments in sports, women athletes were undervalued.

"Right now we're seeing that even if you're the best, women are not paid their fair share,” he said. "It's time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women are paid what they deserve.”

It's hard for me to wrap my head around this criticism.  I can't even get past the irony of a Trump voter wondering about "another avenue of campaigning on victimhood". It's just difficult to wonder if there's a policy dispute here or if it's just an opportunity to suggest that Biden isn't as bright or smart as his opponent.

About the demographic of women, I think Biden is doing better at presenting a cogent argument that women should supporthim and Democrats than Trump and Republicans in November. What do you think?

@toomuchbaloney

It wasn't a criticism or trick question.

Is it not understand by our president and liberals why a player in the league that brings in $200 million a year would be paid less than a player in the league with $10 billion in revenue?

Or, do you all really believe this is a case of inequality and women not being paid their "fair share"?

I'm not familiar with Trump or Biden's arguments that they deserve the woman vote.   Do have a link I could refer to?

YES.

Women's NCAA championship TV ratings crush the men's competition

The final game, between South Carolina's Gamecocks and the University of Iowa's Hawkeyes, averaged about 18.7 million viewers and peaked at a whopping 24 million combined on ESPN and ABC, making it the first time in history that a women's final has drawn a larger TV audience than the men's, according to ESPN.

In contrast, the victory of the men's Division 1 UConn Huskies over Purdue averaged 14.82 million on TBS and TNT.

Sunday's game was also the most-watched basketball game, either men's or women's and college or professional, since 2019.

NCAA agrees to $920 million, 8-year deal with ESPN for women's March Madness, 39 other championships

Per the WSJ this eight-year broadcast-rights contract for 40 sports' championships is worth $115 million a year, triple the value of the previous deal.

The average WNBA salary for the 2020-21 season was $120,648, according to Yahoo Finance.

There are only 14 players making $200,000 or more, according to Sportrac, headlined by Diana Taurasi, Jewell Loyd and Breanna Stewart, who are all earning $228,094.

By comparison, 17 NBA players earn at least $35 million per season, according to ESPN.

The base salary for WNBA rookies varies on when (or if) players were selected in the WNBA Draft. For picks No. 1-4 in the 2022 WNBA Draft, the base salary is expected to be $72,141 in year one. For picks 5-8, the rookie base salary drops to $69,224. Picks 9-12 earn $66,306, while second round picks will receive $63,389 in 2022. Third rounders and undrafted rookies will receive $60,471,

The rookie minimum salary for 2nd round picks, or undrafted players is $1,119,563 (for the 2023/2024 season).

Caitlin Clark's $76,000 WNBA salary puts a spotlight on pay disparity;  WNBA rookies will make 100 times less than their NBA counterparts

WNBA's top player Jackie Young, G, Las Vegas annual salary is $252,450.

Women receive around 10% of the WNBA's overall revenue, while the NBA collective bargaining agreement gives players 50% of revenue,

What the NCAA brings in is irrelevant as they don't pay players, men or women.  Anyway, over the coarse of a season women's basketball still only generates a miniscule amount compared to men's.  The championship game was arguably the best woman to ever play up against the best coach and program in history.  It was likely an anomalie that the ratings were better than the men's game.

The NBA makes $10 billion a year.  The WNBA $200 million, is 50% owned by the NBA,  and the NBA subsidizes the women's league

Propaganda indeed does work if you actually believe this is a case of inequality and women not being paid their "fair share".

Good article.  It says "WNBA player salaries could rise in coming years as interest from fans and advertisers grows. The WNBA is coming off its most-watched regular season in 21 years, and attendance at games last season hit its highest level in 13 years."

Money is going to talk as it always does.  As their viewership and attendance rises so will their power, so will investment in them and competition for the best players,  We are seeing this happen, although a slow pace for sure.  Their point about 10% vs. 50% is a valid one even as they understand they aren't going to get the same salaries as men.

Yep, and they will get more the next time their union negotiates a CBA, likley in 2025.  Here's what folks were saying when the last one agreement was made:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/01/14/wnba-players-union-agree-landmark-deal-new-collective-bargaining-agreement/

So, why did our President need to make such a comment about women being treated equally and called for them to be paid their fair share.  Pandering to the women are victims crowd?  We know Democrats need to create victims out of various groups and demographics (women, transexuals, blacks, student loan recipients, poor people, the list goes on) except of course the strait white male.  And, it is election season...

I'm wondering if straight white men are student loan recipients or poor?  But yeah, it's election season.

We also know that Republicans demonize poor people, loan recipients, etc. as freeloaders and lazy stealing from the man.  The rest are just perverts to be feared.  Deflection on my part probably, but speaking of victimhood.

Yep, deflection.  My fault though for opening the door to it.

Any thoughts on Biden using the example of the WNBA to promote the women aren't paid their fair share narrative?
