PORTAGE LEARNING

Published

Hi, I wanted to create an updated thread for PORTAGE LEARNING as most are somewhat old, or sporifice-ish. Here can you please answer:

What classes you took?

How easy or hard were the courses?

Are you currently taking courses?

Are the exams proctored/webcam proctored/ or just web page locked by the software they use?

I' am currently in their Nutrition course and plan on taking the rest of my pre reqs there as the program I want to go to accepts them (they are regionally accredited).

I just started A&P. I had previously taken A&P, but they've expired for some of the programs I'm interested in. I'm definitely going to make use of the 30-day cancellation if it doesn't work out. I don't think it is going to be a cakewalk, but I'm taking micro in person and didn't want to take another in-person competitive science course, mainly due to scheduling.

I'm not sure if this style of learning without structure is necessarily the best fit for me. I'm somewhat of a procrastinator. I'm attempting to set aside what would be normal "class times" to get it knocked out.

I do think you miss out on some of the advantages of being in the class, such as the professor giving hints that there are certain pieces of information you need to know. Then again, the Portage info may already be cut down to the point. I don't think there are going to be 1000+ pages in the online portion like there would be with a normal A&P text.

The visual body app is also included with tuition, but so far there is not much guidance in the lessons (maybe I haven't gotten there) that directs me to watch or do a certain activity within the app. That would be helpful.

I've narrowed my schools down to two. One accepts portage and the other does not. Fortunately, the one that does not will accept my old A&P, so I'm taking this for myself as a refresher as much as anything. Their reason for not accepting it was simply because the systems covered were in a different order than their classes, so if you take 1 portage class and one on-campus class you may be missing complete body systems.

I am currently taking AP1 in Portage and found it to be fairly easy. I was honestly a bit skeptical about how much I would be learning online compared to taking it in class, but have to say that I am learning a lot. I will say that I did procrastinate a bit in the beginning, and delayed on taking my first exam because I was nervous on whether I studied enough but did pretty well (88%), and mostly 95%, 98% on my other module exams. The labs are probably the easiest since you watch the video, take notes and screenshot the dissections of the pig or images that they show, and then take the exam. Some videos are longer than others so the ones that were 44mins or so took longer for me to complete. I'm meticulous so I paused and screenshot about everything just in case. I'm not sure if it locks the exam while taking the exam though. I took notes on my iPad and would look over if I needed to review something while taking the exam on my laptop. Now I only have one more module exam to take before my final and currently have a 95.13% for the course.

How is the Nutrition class so far? I plan on buying Nutrition and AP2 next after taking my final.

Are the lab exams timed?

How long did it take to complete the course? (estimated)

I've just purchased it so I'm about to start today. Did you complete a module exam/lab exam everyday?

Nutrition was easy. 6 modules and a final exam, I completed in 3 1/2 weeks.

I ended up with an 87% which pisses me off lol because I was so close but got a 75% on one exam because I was tired taking the exam and made silly errors. Alas, a B is a B. You'll def get an A and its a quick course, also pretty interesting.

I'm excited to start A&P1 and just get it over with hopefully before the end of September.

I only have A&P2, Micro, and Chem, (possibly Stats to apply to other programs) to go and I can finally apply to nursing programs in Feb 2020. Portage Learning has been a dream come true.

Please keep checking in on this thread so we can keep it going and others can see as well.

Both labs and module exams gave you an hour to take the exams. The labs had less questions (about 16 questions - essays, multiple choice, fill in the blanks) so I would finish the exams in about 30mins, although I did take almost the whole hour for the labs because I wanted to make sure I scored a 100 on it lol. I did score an 81 on one of my labs (digestive system) because I was being cocky with getting 100s on my previous labs, but this one had a bunch of screenshots for the dissection lol that I thought I could just remember. For essays I didn't write too much, maybe about 2 sentences each in my own words.

I also took a lab exam every week and waited about a week and a half for each module exam. I work full-time and am currently 8 month pregnant so I was tired on some days LOL. I have a friend who is currently in a ABSN program and took the course within a month, so it's do-able.

I had previously applied to an ABSN program about a year ago and at the time I only needed Organic Chemistry to complete before I started their nursing program, but at the end I wasn't able to commit due to my upcoming wedding that year, and I had too many planned vacations that I weren't able to cancel. Now I'm past the 5 year mark for all of my science prereqs so I retaking AP2, Nutrition, Micro and Orgo. I'm hoping I don't need to take stats again by the time I apply cause I hate math but I know I need to freshen up on it for dosage calculations and such for later on.

I'm also debating on when I will apply for the program since I will have a newborn, but I am trying to at least take my prereqs to get it over with. The school I plan on applying to is the same one I almost got into, before I dropped it. They're working with me to see where I'm at and they have a high acceptance rate so as soon as I complete all of my courses, I can start if I choose ..but I'm also looking at other schools as backup.

AP1 is easy, and good luck!

Also, be sure to review any questions you missed. I found a couple of errors in the grading. I don't mean "judgment call" type of errors, but really blatant errors. They were corrected after reaching out, but it makes me think that some type of software is scanning for answers (who knows).

You'll also read some reviews where people say they completed this in a week. I don't think that is possible if you're really trying to learn the material AND without blatant cheating.

It's also going much slower for me than planned, but I'm also taking micro at a local college. I also waited longer to take the first test and have been slow to take the module 2 exam, though the module (respiratory system) is relatively short and simple. I've decided just to take my time on the A&P without rushing and finish up around the same time micro does. It may look better that way from a transcript perspective. I do plan to remain in the course (30 days approaching) and I'm debating whether or not to continue with A&P II. I planned to take it at the school where I'm going to apply for the ADN program. They say they add some priority points for their students that take the pre-reqs with them.

edit: I'll probably still take it at the local college since not all the schools I'm going to apply at accept Portage. I still feel nervous about submitting it to any school. One of the schools shows they will take it under "Geneva College", so I better go ahead and screenshot that ?

True. I'm not sure how some people were able to do the module exams in a week because I really wanted to know the material to prepare myself for nursing school. I purchased the course at the end of May after I came back from vacation, but didn't really start working on it until almost mid-June so it's taking longer for me to finish as well. Thank goodness the school I'm applying to take Portage Learning courses, so I don't need to take it at a community college. The only course they don't take from Portage is Organic Chemistry so I have no choice but to take that at a community college.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm hoping to finish AP1 by the end of September so I think I'll have plenty of time to absorb all the information. Ugh I just want to get into the nursing program already! lol.

Same! But now with a baby on the way, I'm going to wait until maybe next Fall to apply. Good luck with everything!

Oh man. Yeah babies and school are challenging. Good luck to you too!
