Portage Learning

Has any one took any course through portage learning? How was it like? What’s your experience? I will be taking Chem 104 (Gen Chem II) and wanted as much insight as I could get before paying for it.

I like that that it’s self paced and you have one calendar year to complete.

Hello,

First off, it looks like you're part of the armed forces so thank you for your service.

I took Microbiology via Portage. As you mentioned, the main advantage is flexibility with time - you can start a course anytime of the year, complete it anytime as long as it's within 1 year, and it's self-paced.

I think it's relatively cost efficient especially since you don't need to purchase textbooks. But you do have to pay attention to the details in the readings and videos because those are what the exams are completely based upon. I appreciate that the instructor was responsive and explained any content I had trouble understanding.

As far as dislikes, just remember this is my personal experience and opinion. You may end up loving every bit of it. I personally didn't like the format of the exams and the way some questions were worded. The exams consist of short answer, fill-ins, very few multiple choice, many true/false questions. I found it troublesome that I had to type out my answer even for multiple choice questions (there are no radio buttons...you have to type everything out) which can unnecessarily take up time. I also expected more study resources and tools for the price. In some ways, I find the online platform a bit archaic, for lack of a better word.

There aren't many modules (which can be good if you're pressed for time) so you do want to do your best for each exam as they have a lot of weight on your final grade. I would recommend looking at the class syllabus before you register, which can be easily accessed on the website.

All the best.

I love Portage for everything EXCEPT chem. I just finished chem 103 and it was boring and hard AND I WAS FAILING FAST. I eventfully found 3 YouTube channels that saved my life. I ended up with an B.

Would you mind listing the Youtube channels that you used? Thanks.
