PORTAGE LEARNING

Published

Hi, I wanted to create an updated thread for PORTAGE LEARNING as most are somewhat old, or sporifice-ish. Here can you please answer:

What classes you took?

How easy or hard were the courses?

Are you currently taking courses?

Are the exams proctored/webcam proctored/ or just web page locked by the software they use?

I' am currently in their Nutrition course and plan on taking the rest of my pre reqs there as the program I want to go to accepts them (they are regionally accredited).

PLEASE SHARE =]

The first thing that I will say is AVOID telling prospective schools that you are attending Portage learning. When I did that, many freaked out. Your transcript will say ”Geneva College”. Go with that if you can.

Exam are given via a lockdown browser but there is no webcam to see you or your surrounds sssooooo. I pretty much took all of mine at 3 am in bed or 3 am at work on my lunch break.

Test are timed...to include Lab Test. I came armed with a ADHD letter from my doctor. This allotted me twice the time to complete all tests. The school forgot to reset the time for lab tests. It only gave me 30 mins. When I brought this to their attention, I was allowed to retake the test.

So far, I’ve taken:

Nutrition - super easy, you can complete it in a week, if you wanted to.

Statistics - As easy as statistics can be... YouTube and Chegg are a must. This took me a month

Chem 103 - Horrible class... hopefully they revise it by the time that you take it...I complained ALOT. There are 3 YouTube channels that saved my life. Chegg was the best money that I spent this year. It took me 3 months to complete this class...3 months and 2 days to be exact. If you need help studying, let me know. I still have my study material.

I just started Sociology today...8 essays and a final exam term paper... yay me.

I have English with research next.

I also need Computers & Literacy but Portage doesn’t offer it so I’m going to take it thru Rio Salado. It’s a good school...just not self-paced.

I've taken Nutrition as well. Currently in A&P 1 almost done with course. Then I'm taking statistics. Ugh lol.

Surprisingly, I've had no issues with schools that I've inquired with about Portage Learning. All they say is as long as it's regionally accredited it's fine, and if they don't take online science courses then that's it.. I'm in Portland OR btw

I'm in A&P 1. I'm taking my time with it (posted earlier in the thread) to focus on my in person micro class. I think aspects of it are harder, for example, The labs are much more time consuming that my in person labs which normally finish rather quickly. My in-person also only has 2 lab exams.

Portage has 8 lab exams, one for each lab. There is no way to really just watch the video and then ace the exam. You need to take really good notes, almost verbatim and diagram/take pictures, whatever you need to do for your "lab notebook". A 58 minute lab video may take you 4-5 hours. Again, maybe it's easier? However, it takes time and as a result you will learn some A&P.

Anbody that says they finished it in a week or whatever is either lying, didn't need an A for their program, or cheated.

I'm currently on my last two lab exams and then the final exam! Hoping for an A! Currently at 86% I'll be starting A&P II shortly after. Ready to get these courses over with lol

Just wanted to give an update on my portage learning courses. After I completed my AP1 at the beginning of Sept, I ended up purchasing Nutrition, Micro and APII right after. In the beginning I felt a little overwhelmed with trying to consume all of the information all at once, so I decided that I would just start with Nutrition and Micro first, and ended up getting both A's for the courses. Nutrition took about 7 weeks to complete because I had just given birth at the end of Sept and so I was trying to adjust to motherhood. After taking a week and a half off to focus on the baby, I finally decided to dive into Nutrition. At first I started off bad in Nutrition because I didn't do too well on my case study (17/30), but after I got an understanding of what was being asked, it got easier for me throughout the course. Micro took me 8 weeks to complete and is a lot easier than AP btw. The labs were much shorter compared to AP so I completed the labs much faster too. I also found it more interesting compared to AP. Lastly, I saved APII for last because of the amount of information they give you for the first module. There's about 11 pages to go through and it's formatted differently compared to AP1, since the questions were at the bottom of each page instead of at the end. I didn't like it at first but as I wrote the answers out for each page, went back and reread the page, then read the questions with the answers, it helped me get a better understanding of it. The labs for AP2 are much longer compared to AP1 (about 44mins to an hr), so it was kind of annoying to constantly pause and write notes. Took me about a day or 2 to just write notes since I would try to do as much as I could before the baby woke up. Overall, it was interesting but definitely much harder than AP1. I'm just waiting for my professor to grade my final but I have an 98% for the course so far. Good luck with everyone taking the courses! This is my 2nd time taking these classes after many years so I wanted to get all A's this time around. Also, with being on maternity leave I had the time to read and study while the hubby watched the baby, or while she slept? ...but it was still hard to do anything with a newborn lol.

NnekaBaby I am taking Chem 103 do you still have your note that you would be willing to share? I am working on the Labs and am having a hard time getting them "correct" according to the professor

I just finished Math 110, Intro to Statistics. I finished the course in 13 days. I ended up with 562/565. There are 10 modules, and each module has various sets of problems that need to be completed prior to taking the exam. You are only allowed to take one exam per day. The exams closely reflect the homework. So if you actually work a few problems before the exams, you should be fine.

I'm in the process of completing English 101 as well. I am about half way done. There are 8 papers that need to be written, all between 3-5 pages. So far the teacher grades fairly and I am sitting around a 98%.

K so I'm in Micro on Portage right now! so far so good. It's easy and not overbearing. Hoping to finish in a week!

How is the final? Is it like the pre-test or are questions pulled word for word from the tests?

It is literally the exact questions but picked randomly from all of the exams.

Yeah it's the same as the pre exam. might change a couple questions up.

I finished the course with an A.

i am glad i found this thread, i just finished statistics course through portage (thank god i found portage) i am awful in math and it alone has kept me from going forward with my nursing career for many years. i finished with a B in the course and i am about to start the A&P 1 course, i was just wondering from those that have taken this course how are the exams i am just wondering if they are done the same as the exams i took in statistics meaning the screen locks but it is not video"d and you got an hour to take them a couple of the test a little longer any feed back would be helpful. thanks in advance.
