PORTAGE LEARNING

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi, I wanted to create an updated thread for PORTAGE LEARNING as most are somewhat old, or sporifice-ish. Here can you please answer:

What classes you took?

How easy or hard were the courses?

Are you currently taking courses?

Are the exams proctored/webcam proctored/ or just web page locked by the software they use?

I' am currently in their Nutrition course and plan on taking the rest of my pre reqs there as the program I want to go to accepts them (they are regionally accredited).

PLEASE SHARE =]

I would reconsider Portage, unless you know people have already gotten in with it. Buyer Beware.

The school that told me they would accept it are now having second thoughts.

I used Geneva not Portage to apply to Mercer University and South College. Don't even mention the name Portage when applying. I wish that I had taken all of my classes through Portage (Geneva) it's hassle-free and worth every red cent.

Hi,

So I applied to Drexel for their ABSN program and was accepted to their Fall 20 cohort. They took my portage learning credit but I read somewhere in one of the Drexel forum that someone needed to retake Chemistry but their admission counselor said that they don't accept it, which was weird. When I applied in November, I just submitted my transcript from the portage learning site and it was received in my application status as "Geneva College". Maybe send the transcript in and see if they take it or not? I'm not sure if its a new thing or if it was just that person. I also applied to Gwynedd and they accept portage learning except for Organic Chemistry. Other schools such as Widener University, West Chester University and community colleges such as Montgomery Community College, Rowan Burlington College also took portage when I applied.

I used Geneva because that is what shows up on your transcript...not Portage to apply to Mercer University and South College.

I did use Geneva. I didn’t say anything about Portage, however, the transcript does have a line that mentions portage which calls it into question.

I’ve received quite a bit of pushback from the admissions counselor at Marquette for wanting to use portage, and they pushed Utica heavily. I don’t see much difference personally regionally accredited and covers the same topics. Perhaps the concern is people may cheat on the portage exams?

Yep, and I'm not saying a school Duke University won't accept it. I'm getting pushback from community colleges and tech school ADN programs.

Ironically, some of them would probably accept the University of Phoenix, which is probably worse.

Indeed. I’m thinking of just trying my luck, taking all but the anatomy through portage and hit anatomy at my local CC. My undergrad is 4.0 and grad school was 3.83 so I shouldn’t have too much to worry about.

Last I looked (and from what an admissions advisor told me), Mercer only accepts some of their classes. None of their lab classes. If you have different information, that's cool.

This was sent to me from mercer:

Good info. Thanks. Maybe a good general guideline there for how programs perceive the credits.

Last thing and I'll stop blowing up this thread. Above the class on the transcript it says "Portage Learning division" and this is at the bottom, so there's no hiding it:

This document is being furnished at the request of the student as verification of achievement for the course(s) listed above. The completed classes are listed as institutional credit on a Geneva College transcript; students may request an official Geneva College transcript through the PortageLearning.com portal for processing. Portage Learning is a division of Geneva College that offers online college courses to students seeking to transfer courses to their home institution where they intend to pursue a degree. PortageLearning.com is the delivery platform and facilitator for the division. Therefore, inquiries for Geneva Portage courses are to be directed to Portage Learning either via phone at 1-888-724-3590, option 3, or e-mail [email protected]

Hello. Has anyone taken the Ethics course at Portage Learning?

Yes, that's what I have, too. But I only sent the accepted classes to Mercer. I took Chemistry with Portage for South College in Atlanta. Mercer didn't require chem. But I knew to use "Geneva" when applying to South because of the Statistics and Nutrition that I had sent to Mercer from Portage.

Specializes in Chemistry/Physics Teacher at a community college..

I teach online introductory Chemistry and general Chemistry at a community college so I have a unique perspective about Portage/Geneva College. Here are a few things one should be aware of.

Portage (like similar institutions) uses adjunct faculty members and not full-time faculty to teach their courses. They do this primarily to increase their "profits". The result is that you may not get quality feedback or help. For example, do not be surprised if you email your instructor and you do not get a response.

The Chemistry courses at Portage do not have an adequate lab component. The Portage Chemistry courses' lab component consists of some watching some videos and taking a test. This lack of a lab component can be a "red flag" as far as transferability goes. When I was designing my online Chemistry and physics courses, I became acutely aware of this issue. My courses do not have this transferability issue since I utilize a lab kit in which the students can do basic experiments safely at home.

I've taken several classes with Portage and all of my instructors have always responded to my emails (and I email a lot). The two times that my instructors went on vacation, they let us know ahead of time and gave us the name and email of the substitute instructor who would be grading assignments and responding to emails. At West GA Tech where I actually sat in class, my medical terminology instructor (woh was great) was one of many adjunct instructors at the school. They didn't even have keys to the classrooms. So whether in-person or online, adjunct doesn't mean that the quality of the instructor, communication or learning should be any less than that received from the full-time instructor.

As far as the lab is concerned, just ask the school that you are transferring to if it is acceptable or not BEFOREHAND. Just send them the course description. It's not rocket science.
