So I hear they killed the PVT. Seems unfair and mean. Target: desperate, impatient nursing grads. Showing off their power to make those grads pay a whole $8 to get their results like we had to do before the PVT.
So bullies?
The exam was made harder? According to whom?
According to NCSBN. The NCLEX is 'revamped' every few (3?) years but its not always made 'harder'. Effective 4/1/13, the passing standard for NCLEX-RN was increased. The NCLEX-PN passing standard was also increased and I believe that began 4/1/14. I do remember reading about the 'new' test and NCSBN had stated that the average of 85% of first time test takers who usually pass, will drop a bit changing it to less than the 85% its been for a while but they say it should also rebound within a few years .
https://www.ncsbn.org/2630.htm ---->[h=3]NCLEX-RN Passing Standard[/h]The NCSBN Board of Directors voted on Dec. 17, 2012, to raise the passing standard for the NCLEX-RN. The passing standard was revised from -0.16 logits to 0.00 logit. This passing standard was implemented April 1, 2013, in conjunction with the 2013 NCLEX-RN Test Plan. The new passing standard will remain in effect through March 31, 2016. The announcement about the revised 2013 NCLEX-RN passing standard is available under 2013 News Releases.
I was one of the 'lucky' ones who took the newer NCLEX-PN when they revamped it in 2008 and again when I took my NCLEX-RN so being the type of person who likes to have all her ducks in a row and have all my homework done, I did a lot of reading on the NCSBN site.
[COLOR=#0066cc]https://www.ncsbn.org/4699.htm--> How will the change in the passing standard affect the pass rate?Anytime there is a change in the passing standard there is an expected temporary effect on the candidate passing rate. Historically, pass rates tend to be lower immediately following a passing standard increase. These pass rates traditionally rebound within 3 years of a new passing standard being set.
And according to the article in the link below, the pass rate for the RN exam in 2001 was 69%. Which would suggest that the NCLEX of the past was more difficult than the current NCLEX.

I wasn't trying to state the test is harder or easier than years gone by with my post. However if you want to go that route and do 'the older test was harder, no the later test was', one could argue the passing rate was much lower in 2001 because the testers weren't being taught all the information they needed in school in order to pass and that testers of later years were better educated. I have no dog in this fight on whose was harder. I didn't take the older version of the NCLEX nor did I take the pencil/paper version so I can't compare them. I was mearly answering your question. :)
You asked who to whom was the test harder. I answered..according to the people who create it.
Eh, I'll admit it. I checked the PVT 20 minutes after taking my NCLEX-PN. What I didn't do is post multiple times freaking out about it. Do I get some chocolate for that?
The RN who taught the Kaplan review course I was required to take by my school mentioned the PVT thing. She was an instructor at a local ADN program and she said that it had worked for many of her students.

I am not a new grad, but there is some validity to that assertion. I assure you there were no questions about bed-making and baths on the contemporary NCLEX.
