A lot of new graduate nurses choose the med surge floor because it has a wide variety of cases, and they dont know what or if they want to specialize. I doubt you are too old! New grads need the veteran nurses to help and teach them along! :)

There are several women I work with in their 50s. I work nights which is generally a younger crew, but from what I've seen these women move a lot faster than some of the younger ones.

25! Hahahaha, just kidding. It feels that way sometimes. I would say you need to be able to walk five miles over the course of the day, squat, bend, and lift. Consider some gym training if you needed it..my employer actually provided an enrollment fee to a local gym with three sessions with a personal trainer. I used them to learn some endurance training for my 12 hour shifts.

On my med-surg floor I worked with many nurses > 50; more than a couple of them in their 60's and at least one in her 70's.

70s?!?! No, ma'am! That won't be me, but kudos to her.

I am 31 and I feel like it really keeps me fit working med/surg. I lost almost all of the baby weight just working alone- and caring for a LO.
The nurses I work with range from 20's-60's Day shift.
One nurse is 66 and still going! She is faster than some of us younger ones!
Yeah, she probably shouldn't have been working. She couldn't hear worth a darn.

Haha, I doubt you're too old. Sure the running around all day, lifting/repositioning can get to you, but it's about multi-tasking and delegating too.
You gotta work smarter, not harder. :) Good luck!

At my hospital? 55 seems to be the oldest. They pension out around that age and run for the door. We have a few casuals working at 60 on those units but not many.
The specialty services? They hang on as long as they can. I've heard we have a 76yo who is very hard of hearing and refuses to wear a hearing aide on one unit.

I am a new grad. My current preceptor started as a new grad on our busy med-surg floor at age 46. She is excellent. Many of the nurses I work with are older than she and they are excellent. I treasure the veteran nurses on my floor!
