people say that everybody in medicine has got something, something that totally grosses them out.
this tissue, organ, bodily function is avoided at all costs or you'll :barf01:.
i haven't come acrossed mine yet... (i'm a little scared of what it'll be, i know its lurking out there somewhere).
what's yours?
Ok I have been a Paramedic for a long time and am now a nurse and I have found something that tops any of the gross weak in the kneed moments I have ever had..... In the past it was a Trach being suctioned, pretty much anything with mucus, phlegm. Than it developed into trench foot. I cannot find the vomit smiley . Now it is a neonatal eye exam when the opthamologist inserts the little little tools to open the further(cannont for the life of me think of the tool LOL... and examines the lens ands retina and optic nerve with the camera. I almost lost it....
ANYTHING to do with an eye injury- orbit smashed, eyelid flipped inside out- whatever! When I was in school, I had to go to see a cataract removal-no big deal right? Well when anesthesia put that BIG needle into that lady's muscle around her eye I was horrified......... what was worse, was when he asked her to follow his finger and only ONE eye moved........... EEEEEWWW! I hit the floor. That pretty much ruined me forever.
TOTALLY agree! I hate eyes! I get sympathy eye watering and can't look at them, I pawn off my morgan lenses on someone else to do something for them they don't like.
I think I would have hit the floor, also.

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!
I once had a resident in LTC who'd had the entire left side of his face removed due to cancer, from the jaw to the eye socket. Every two hours, the cavity had to be spritzed with normal saline to keep it from drying out. You couldn't help but see all the way INSIDE the guy's face.......and believe me, it wasn't pretty. YAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!
I once had to take care of a man who had started with mouth cancer, and even with treatment, ended up eating away most of his face. He came in with maggots in the open areas. His mandible was a bleached white, basically most of his upper and lower skull bones were showing. I took a quick look, and begged another nurse to switch assignments with me. She did. Bless her.
Blessings

Ahhh, I just came here to mention this! Just observed my first one of these the other day...normally I'm not bothered by any body part that looks like it's supposed to (i.e., not bleeding/rotting/etc.), but yeah, that eye exam gave me the heebie-jeebies. The speculum and the depressor, those little things are called...and the speculum is so evil-looking, despite its size! :chair:
I'm not even in nursing school yet (and have never worked in a hospital setting) but I thought it would be smart to check out what grosses everyone else out. OMG I was barely able to hold it together reading all these... I've sure got a lot to learn but the really dirty crusty feet seem to be pretty scary! :chair:
Hmmm... I've been an OR nurse for 4 years and remembering my first exposure was not really a problem.. I've assisted with C-sections, Cholecystectomy, BKA and Maxillofacial traumas and Leforts never did I become engrossed.. What was weird about me was there's this onetime i got curious with what ophtha nurses are doing in assisting, so i asked to observe.. There's this 1 patient who has detached iris or something.. it's just a simple procedure of stitching it back, oh but the sight of eye manipulations or something makes me weak... Strange but i was able to overcome it through constant exposure...
No problem thus far with vomit, BM, wounds, foul-smelling GI bleeds....but I almost fainted when I was a student and stood in to observe a surgeon slice into the leg of a conscious pt to remove blood clots. He gave her numerous shots to numb the area, but little good it did.....she winced with every incision. I barely got out of the room before I slid down to the floor out in the hallway. I could never make it in the ED!!! At least I know my limits!! :icon_roll
