i have a friend that wants to attend nursing while in the army? does the army have their own schools that they train nurses? how does it work? also , if you join the army as a nurse with a degree do you become a officer or do you still have to attend OCS ( officers canadate school). ? thank you all in advance,

They put you through nursing school (BSN) in exchange for a committment after graduation. You become an officer but you still have to go through officer training.

When I was active they had a program called green to gold where they would change your status from active duty to active reserve while in school full time, pay for your schooling and keep your tricare/champus active and in return you enlisted as an officer for twice the length of school, they were accepting Assoc degrees in certain fields as it was quicker return to active service (may be possibleto enlist now as an ADN and enter as an officer but you would be highly deployable), their unit should have an educational laison who can give the details, otherwise active duty + nursing school just wouldn't work, even suport MOS' have field time and deployment.

you can also join the ANC and use the Nurse Candidate Program. http://www.army.com has lots of info on this. Just be sure to chat with an OFFICER recruiter, specifically a health care recruiter if possible.

You have many options:

-If your friend wishes to stay enlisted, they can try to reclass into the 68W MOS then try to get into the LVN program. (ASI M6)

-If you are a nurse from an accredited program with a degree, you can go in through the ANC and commission. Prior service people may pick up an O1E designation that can help with pay. You will still have to complete the OBC (Officer Basic Course) program in San Antonio however.

-Qualified ADN/ASN RN's can enter the ANC through the National Guard; however, without a BS, they cannot advance beyond the grade of O3.

I know a few people that took the Excelsior College route while serving as enlisted. And many colleges offer classes on post, but your admittance is dependent on your CO's discretion. I was assigned to Line Units (Armored Cavalry), so just about all of our medics never really had the time to go to school. I don't know what it was like in Rear Echelons. Honestly, I would suggest completing finishing school as a civilian or National Guard and then go Active Duty. There's student loan re-payment programs that could really benefit you.

It depends on where you are. I will complete finals for graduation on April 24th of this month and attend an RN program at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. 20 of the 40 seats every year are held for active duty and family members. One of my classmates who will graduate with me is AD with 4 years left until retirement. She just takes leave if needed. We started with 5 active duty individuals.

The BEST deal for enlisted soldiers with some college is the AECP!!! The Army Enlisted Commissioning Program. This is what I did. http://www.usarec.army.mil/AECP/

If you meet the requirements, they will send you to the university of your choice while the Army pays your tuition. You are still on active duty, so you get full pay & benefits while attending school. You have 24 months to complete your BSN, and then you get commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant.

If anyone reads this, I am currently trying to put my packet together for the AECP. I have most of my prereqs done. The only one that will be hard to do is the A&P 1 & 2. What is a good college to go to for this program. That is my hardest thing is finding a college that will work with me on my prereqs. Any info someone has would be great.

Thanks

Look into ccconline (Colorado community colleges) for online A&P courses. Another possibility is, I believe it is called, Ocean County college, http://www.ocean.edu. And another possibility is University of New England (expensive). HTH

Hey everyone,

I have a question? I just got accepted into a nursing program for my BSN, it's a 2 and a half year program. I have six years prior service active duty army, I have my bachelor's in Information Technology Management (I decided not to follow that path, because I have zero interest in it. Over the past few years I've been contemplating going back into the service (Active Duty Army), and I've also been looking into the ANCP program so that I'm guaranteed an active duty officer slot, however I currently have around 10,000 in personal loans and credit card debt, and tuition for the nursing program will run me about 15,000, and I'm not sure that the ANCP would be enough to pay the tuition portion, so I have also been considering the army reserves or the national guard, however my end goal is to be an Active Duty Officer, does anybody know the best path? ie...Should I go national guard for 3 years since they will most likely pay tuition and then try to do an Active Duty slot or should I go ahead and do ANCP, although school tuition will be significant, and yes I have considered also taking student loans out and then seeing if I can Direct Commission and do the student loan program, but I really like the idea of a guaranteed active duty slot, please let me know options that I may not know of....

I would advise you to speak to an Army nurse recruiter.
