Nurses and Nursing Students: what was/is your biggest pet peeve in nursing school?

Published

What is your biggest pet peeve about being in nursing school or things that happened while you were in nursing school???

Don't you hate it when:

you study your *$$ off and still dont get an A!

when you hear nursing students say "ewww thats gross" or "it stinks in here, im gonna throw up" or "ew i cant chage a depends thats so gross" -that drives me nuts! i dont know how these students will make it in the world of nursing....

come on nursing students i know we all have something that really irks us about school (even though we all loooove it!)....

My pet peeves come from our professors mostly. They are so disorganized and makes them appear un proffesional. Isn't it ironic? ...considering they push the whole professionalism crap on us. Consider this...we are taking a practice HESI exam aat the end of each qtr. to familiarize ourselves with the test format. we show up to take the exam....oops they "forgot to order the disks". what imbecels? Are all of your guys professors as sucky as mine? We have had a million quizzes and such over things we have never DISCUSSED in class until after the quiz. haha

Yeah. There is great hypocrisy with instructors. They're always lecturing about being organized and professional and, the fact is, they're anything but that. They also don't communicate well at all.

As far as test or quiz questions .... I've learned to never trust anything they say. They love to mislead you on what's on the test. They'll make a point of saying something's not the test, and it is ... or they'll say it's on the test and it's not. A lot of it comes from disorganization as well.

What they're really testing for is whether you've done the reading beyond what's mentioned in class. Most of the time the answer is buried in the book somewhere.

rigidity

with over 500 nursing students who started out our class you could not get an ounce of attention if your life depended on it

now that I am out of nursing school, the school painted a skewed picture of the nursing role in general

well just got home from a particularly grueling week and just found out that there were a few students in my class who cheated on our huge pathophys test!

It made me so mad! I got 4 hours of sleep that night and almost made myself sick studying and they cheated! just made me really steamed! they made the rest of us look bad!

ironically this was 2 days after we received a huge lecture on cheating, we discussed it and how we all felt about it...the teachers told us that if any of us were caught cheating that we would be dismissed from the program!!

Well...so far the teachers dont know exactly who was cheating but told our class that those students should come forward bc they would find out about it and it would be worse for them if they didnt come forward...then she asked us to please come forward and give her the names of the students (in private of course)....well two students disappeared after that....my teacher said that those students wouldnt be kicked out, that if they came forward she would consider it a learning experience...personally, i think they should be kicked out! 2 days after we had a whole class on cheating!!!! come on we are masters students not high school students!!!

I hate the stories of how that one person in the class has a comment about everything talked about, how usually that same person has had some family member who has had such n'such disease, condition etc.

I hate the person who thinks they know more about nursing than the professor does (ok, well I've never taken a nursing class but i have taken A&P I).

I hate the people who constantly ask "is this going to be on the test"......geez anything that is covered in class is fair game to be on the test. I had an economics professor who would like at you like you're crazy if you ever asked him if something was going to be on the test...hello!

I hate when people come in late, and then go to the professors desk and rummage through desparetely trying to look for hand-outs already passed out.

I hate when ppl come in late and loud.

Cell phones...need I say more?

I hate the people who after receiving tests back they're like "what did you get what did you get" and it turns out u got a higher score than they did and they get pissed and make excuses why they didn't get a good grade.

I hate when people ask fifty million questions about what this is and what that is...For instance, a student raises their hand and says, "what is it when i have [put symptoms here]" Go to a doctor, geez luiz.

I seriously hate it when ppl are disruptive in class and rude to the professors. Geez this went on so much at my school, the way these people would talk to their professors is unreal...showing no respect at all. :angryfire

Umm that's all i can think of right now :)

cell phones should be banned from classes...well i understand some have kids and there may be an emergency, but more often than not its just someones friend calling over and over again! arg.

It drives me absolutely crazy in my class when I ask one of my teachers a question and there is one girl in my class who insists on answering my every question! She will literally interrupt the teacher and answer my question as if I asked her! ITs sooo irratating...Sometimes I ask a friend that I sit next to a question even unrelated to nursing school and she will eavesdrop and insert her 2 cents..all the time...

it also drives me nuts when we go over quizzes and tests and there is that one student who fights every answer they got wrong...its like ok maybe you can contest if you have valid reasoning but they never do..he will give his rationale and I think....you got it wrong...move on...or take it up with the teacher privately!

I hated it when people would argue over an answer with the prof. The worst is when they argue and the prof basically tells them they are wrong and starts to move on and the student is still going at thinking they are not wrong. The other is arguing over what the prof is teaching the classs and listening to people whine because it is different then what they read in the book. That also goes for test questions. I just want to tell them to shutup because they are wrong and they are wasting my tuition that I payed for this class.

The person who had a story for every disease and condition in the book, and would proceed to take a full 30 minutes to describe.

I'm with you on that one too. There is always one person who had the disease or know someone who has it and feels the need to share with everyone. Even when there is no point to the story!!!!!! I would always think to myself that either this person is full of crap or she is the unluckiest person in the world.

I remember there were a few mean spirited students who were vindictively competetive and went out of their way to get a classmate in trouble at every chance.

Can't help but wonder who they're terrorizing now that they're out of school. They're probably carrying out plenty of 'young and old eating' in the workplace. :(

How about the student with a prior degree in a certain field that needs to point it out ALL-THE-TIME!!!!!!!!!!

IN class !!!!

AND proceeds to argue with the prof at any given moment for any point at all !!!

Ugh....

When i took Microbiology we were sat 4 at a table. This lady who asy next to me had previously taken Organic Chem. Well everytime we did a lab she wuold say" in organic chem. we didnt do it like this" Organic chem this....organic chem that.....finally oe day i said" you know what, this is not organic chem.....ITS MICRO!!!! GET OVER IT"

ugh this is so funny! I agree about the cell phone thing! I HATED that and agree if you need it use the vibrator setting but some would answer it as they walked out. I guess the class was lucky they didn't stay IN the classroom and talk on the phone! I also agree about the one that has a story for everything almost bragging not the ones that legitimately add to the lecture. Also reading about organic chem, my organic chem teacher from hell who refered to (not myselt) other students not actually in the nursing program but on probation OR just plain not in the program yet maybe on the waiting list as "Nursing wannabes." arghhhh...I was so ticked at her. She felt it was HER responsibility to make sure we were competent nurses. I'm not talking about an nursing instructor in clinical or say med surg instructor basic intro to organic chem....this woman was crazy. I did fine in it but she terrorized us so much I like did everything to make sure I passed so I wouldn't have to take the class again. We got the deans involved it was such a mess. She lectured us in the begining of the course how she was in the hospital and b/c of one nurse she was traumatized and took longer to cooperate hence why she needed to make sure we would be competent. Hello conflict of interests! I got a 39% on the final and I think I was in the top 5 for that mark. Ok the only thing I got out of the darn thing was analyzing abgs. Ok and learning about Zyban as an extracredit assignment. What's sick I was so preoccupied with that class I did not concentrate on my nutrition class as much and HELLO I need that just as much and there even WAS chemistry in that class. I was so irked. Thank god for dieticians or I'd be screwed!

oh and it also drives me crazy when...that one person who NEVER comes to class wants to copy YOUR homework or class notes!! I always feel bad and cant say NO but sometimes I want to!

wow....me too !!!!!

I tell them straight up !

I tell them " I bothered to come to class and woke up at 6 am to do it. No free rides here baby ! Now go away !" :chuckle
