Am I a bully?

I was written up and was fired for this. I was charge doing three different tasks at the same time at 1200. A RN comes up to me and says I' m so busy.I looked up from the discharge paper I was working on and said "that's too bad you are so busy , staff should be returning from lunch soon". So I'm being told saying "that's too bad "was a bulling remark.I thought it was just feedback. Also that I refused to help her now sure how her saying "I'm so busy "was a request for help.I also was busy doing discharge paperwork and watching telemetry and answering the phone. Was I a bully?

I know this is only one side of the story but it's a very short side and makes me think that there's a lot missing! Never heard of anyone being fired for something that seems as minor as this, do you have a long string of other complaints against you and this was the final straw?

Surely there's more to this story? Is this the first incident with this employer? Or have you been written up before? Any history of bad feelings between you and any other staff?

There should be more to the story than what you are disclosing. I say things like "that's too bad that the unit is so busy today," and "it's really too bad/bad luck for you that your patient did this,"...never been written up for making those remarks. So unless your employer was supremely unjust, or you are concealing some thing. What you said wasn't inflammatory. So I'm a bit baffled that you were fired for it.

This was the only bulling issue.I was having a issue with new nurse manager about discharge inFeb she came out with I was to do all discharges I basicly said it was stupid to expect me to do all discharges. She wrote me up.since this issue in Feb I have done every discharge written on my time at work.it takes about an hour for each discharge many computer issues as MD can't do med rec 40 percent of the time but I kept my mouth shut since and complied to her demand.i was fired because I had been on a 3 day suspension on day 3 I when into hospital.I had work ther 40 years never knew and was not told I could not be in the hospital during that time I had spoken to 3 manager none told me I could not be hospital.I had gone to set up appt with HR and went to floor I work to pick some of my stuff.

New-ish manager not meshing with a 40 year employee? Maybe you were being groomed for termination, but telling your new boss that they are stupid is a sure way to help that along.

As a charge myself, any staff coming to me and saying "I'm so busy" is clear *nurse-speak* asking for help.

Edit: Also, a more helpful way to close that remark about staff returning for work soon would be to add that if said help doesn't show up soon, you'll provide fall-back help.

There is no way we can evaluate you over the internet with this short, one sided story. Tone of voice and body language are too important in communication, and we can't see or hear you.

I've seen nasty nurses who've been cranky, distempered, and have made people miserable for 40 years in one job. They are making top dollar and firmly entrenched. Once in a while a new manager will be able to get rid of them. Colleagues will publicly decry the injustice of it, while inwardly thinking "It's about time".

So, you weren't fired for "being a bully," you were fired for coming to the hospital while on suspension (for the "bullying" incident? For something else entirely?) And you previously got "written up" for the conversation with your nurse manager about doing all the discharges. I would guess that this nurse manager was looking for an excuse to get rid of you -- it's unfortunate that you gave her one. I'm sorry this happened to you, and I hope things will work out okay over time. Best wishes!

Maybe they joined to get advice like a lot of people do. But yes, not enough info.

What are you? CNA, LPN, RN? Nothing on your profile.

NM has been looking for anything and everything to fire you , since the February incident.

If you want to fight the termination, I would ask to see the HR policy stating that you are not allowed on the premises if you are on suspension. It will be a long, hard, nasty fight.

With 40 years (?) of experience... you CAN find another position. It would be worthwhile to consult a lawyer.
