Now that the Covid 19 vaccine is just around the corner... Will it be mandatory?

Are we going to be able to refuse it, or will it be mandatory?

I have had severe reactions to the influenza vaccine and eventually I declined it.

Do we need to have a severe reaction in order for us to decline any further covid 19 vaccines? Or we could still opt out?

What do you guys think?

Those of us not working are likely not going to have much access to any vaccines before next Summer.  In my opinion.

If you compare any trial size to the world’s population, it will always be tiny. Seven percent 8 billion would actually be 560 million people. A trial with 50,000 is actually only 0.000625% of the world’s population. Yup. Tiny.

Math never was my strong suit LOL - I would like to thank you for your thoughtful and respectful post addressing my understanding and adding to my knowledge base. Unlike some others I have never found your posts to be anything but respectful/informative so there's that.

I am still doing my own research but I enjoy chewwing on some food for thought!

Neither of the major hospitals (including mine) in my city are requiring it, though both have strict flu vaccination policies. Also there was a news article this morning about UK warning against the covid vaccine for people with severe allergies: https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/09/health/covid-vaccine-allergies-health-workers-uk-intl-gbr/index.html

Personally, I am all for vaccination. I understand that there are risks of rare reactions (gardasil), but the key word here is "rare". The risk of disease with Covid is far greater. On the other hand, I had Covid and I have tested positive for antibodies recently. It isn't known yet how effective those antibodies are or how long they last, but I do have them now. I would like to defer the vaccine for now and get vaccinated later, after those who don't have antibodies or at greater risk for complications have had a chance to get those first limited doses.

I also disagree with the entire vaccine vs autism debate. I have several autistic family members and my children are fully vaccinated, despite our strong family history. There is abundant evidence from reputable sources regarding vaccine safety and autism. I find it disturbing to see this argument so common among nurses, and I hope that this sentiment will not cause the general public to delay vaccination.

... in response to macawakes comment about why the studies are better in the trial with smaller numbers  than after it is released.

I said what now? ? I don’t know if this is me and my English-not-as-a-first-language issues, but that is not what I was trying to say. I was in a non-in depth way trying to illustrate the subject of ”statistical power” and attempted to demonstrate why you don’t need need to test millions of people to find things out with a reasonable degree of certainty. Something being better than something else wasn’t part of what I was trying to convey.

I was tired after a long shift and I noticed several spelling and grammar mistakes and missing words when I looked through my posts. Perhaps that contributed to the confusion. (For example in my hypothetical RCT the participants were of course injected with the trial vaccine Fixitall, not infected ?)  Darn autocorrect, or darn sleep deprived butterfingers. One of the two for sure. And... I’m tired again so no doubt this post will also be peppered with mistakes.

Here’s a bit more information on statistical power which for anyone who has the time, energy and inclination to delve deeper into the topic.

The vaccine injury compensation program pays out more every year than the previous year. And that's without allowing Autism cases at all.

Vaccines do not cause autism.

Some logic I've heard in our nursing home is: if every resident is required to get the vaccine, why force every staff to get it.  If the facility's plan is to protect the residents and all the residents are vaccinated...........mission accomplished without staff being vaccinated.

Herd immunity. Not only that, unvaccinated staff can pass it among themselves, leaving nobody to take care of the residents.

This is an application of technology that is 30 years old.  The technology is not new.

Not 90-95% effective because it hasn't been out for a year?  Scientific studies say that you are wrong.

I am Legend?  Seriously?  More fear mongering?  Can we keep away from the sci-fi and stick to the facts.

So far the evidence is that the risks from this vaccine are lower than the risk from driving to work.  If you have a scientific study involving RNA tech that says otherwise, please post it.  I'd like to read it.

You don't want it?  Is it because your feelings are being affected by the fear mongering or do you have good reason to believe that the risks out weigh the benefits?  This is not a reference to the I am Legend comment.  I've seen tons of fear mongering and propaganda since this pandemic began.  I am Legend is just a drop in a very large barrel.

No one is responsible for your feeling but yourself.  If you are feeling guilty do you have reason to be?

If the vaccine is made mandatory then prepare to get vaccinated or find a new employer.  If the Biden administration makes it mandatory, then that is going to open a whole new kettle of fish.  BTW I am not in favor of mandatory COVID vaccination.  I am in favor of rational decision making.

Good luck and take care.

I know your post is not necesarily aimed at my comments with regard to a very bad Sci Fi movie - but you may have missed the level of sarcasm with which I meant it.  One thing working in acute psych has given me is a very dark sense of humor seasoned with a dash of cynicism and a pinch of sarcasm.

A similar version of this thread is going on in my own home as my somewhat paranoid but high functioning autistic husband keeps me updated on daily infection/death rate etc.... Wednesday I worked a 20 hour day and when I came home I was told about "ALL" the  people in GB who had anaphalaxis after getting the vaccine. Doing my own research I found out there were two such cases, and while the health authorities did recommend caution for those with severe allergies the vaccination schedule would continue.

I would never tell someone to not get vaccinated or to get vaccinated. I will educate when I can but also know when I am up against a brick wall. I have pretty severe auto-immune dysfunction and will most likely get the shot. BUt whatever is wrong with my body has also affected my affinity for vaccines. In the past 4 years I have had multiple vaccines while in school only to have no anitbodies present on titre testing.

It won't be mandatory. Deal with it.

The technology may not be brand new but it has NEVER been used in vaccines in humans. That would constitute to it being considered "brand new".

From the CDC:

Key Points to Share with Your Patients

In addition to the following key messages, you can refer your patients with questions to CDC’s COVID-19 mRNA vaccine webpage.

Like all vaccines, COVID-19 mRNA vaccines have been rigorously tested for safety before being authorized for use in the United States.

mRNA technology is new, but not unknown. They have been studied for more than a decade.

mRNA vaccines do not contain a live virus and do not carry a risk of causing disease in the vaccinated person.

mRNA from the vaccine never enters the nucleus of the cell and does not affect or interact with a person’s DNA.
