I was talking with a few people about this and it got me wondering, what do you as a nurse prefer to work and why?
Me, I love working nights. Usually a lot more autonomy(depending on your unit) Not nearly as many distractions and I'm just a night owl.
Only thing I do not like working nights is having to call the on call doc sometimes(you know they love it)

I prefer nights without a doubt.
Night shift means no abusive family members at the bedside to bother me. Night shift means no snippy doctors wanting me to round with them. Night shift means avoiding the millions of new orders to take off. Night shift means getting to bypass management and the daytime clique.

nights are definitely quieter. no therapy aides, kitchen folks, adminstration or family. Night shift usually has a lot more "paperwork" to do at my job. I perfer days b/c I have such a hard time staying awake.

i'm a day girl......can't sleep during the day so despite the families, the interruptions, the politics, the 3 meals, the in beds, the oob's, the orders, x-rays and other nonsense, i'd still rather work days. me, i have to have my feet up and my brain off by 2000 or so.....

Nights definitely! You avoid the Politics on the unit, skirt management for the most part, it is quieter and less distractions exist. Calling the doc never bothered me, it's what he gets paid for!

After working days for 10 years as a CNA I became an RN and in our hospital new RN's start on night shift. I really dreaded the change! I began nights in Jan. as an LPN and became an RN in July. After 8 months on the shift I have been suprised at how well I actually like it. I like everyone else, like not having all of the outside influences and spending time with my patients. Because there are only 2 nurses on at night we work much more as a team than the days do. Of course when it is busy we are really busy! There are times that I miss the interactions of the day shift. All in all I like the night shift and I have really enjoyed being an RN.:wink2:

I looooove nights! I have a hubby and 3 kids so I get to see them more by being here when they get home from school, I have a friend that takes the girls to school the mornings I'm getting home so I come home and can get to bed by 9ish and get up by 2 to pick them up, come home do their homework and hang out, make dinner if I didn't make something in the crockpot (my best friend in the kitchen lol) eat with the family and head off to work, some nights dh gets home after I leave, and my son plays football with the school so I at least get to watch 1/2 his home games if it's a work night, if I was on days I'd miss the whole thing, I'd leave just as they were geting up and get home just around bed time

I loved nights but unfortunately my body did not after awhile. To the point high B/P, sleep deprivation with all of its problems. I still wish I could work nights. I just could not make my body like it as I got older.

I work only days.
I like sleeping in my bed at night.
I like that I get enough sleep and never feel like a zombie.
