Thank you, glutton4punishment! There just seems to be so much negativity and not liking jobs. This is a tough economy. It's amazing what a positive attitude can help you accomplish. Like I said. This would not have been my first choice. My love is ER. However, at this point I would not even think of leaving my facility. I adore my residents. And love taking care of them. The facility I work for takes good care of their employees and our residents. :heartbeat:redbeathe

I started nursing school KNOWING I did not want to work in LTC. Well, I graduated one May, put applications in at the one local hospital (yup, I live rural) and at 3 nursing homes just for options. I was offered a job at a LTC for PRN just after graduation but turned it down because I wanted to concentrate on studying for NCLEX. Three days after I got my confirmation of passing the exam, the same facility called me and offered me a full time 11-7 position, Monday through Friday. I have been working there for over a year and LOVE it. I am so glad I gave it a chance.

I graduated in May and passed the NCLEX in July. I was fortunate in that the second job I applied for I got. It was at a LTC. And yes I was one of the people that swore in NS that I would never work at a NH. However, I did not want to drive an hour and a half to two hours to a hospital to work. I love my job. The facility is wonderful. I am just finishing orientation. I have had a 3 month orientation. I get up every morning looking forward to work. I am so sorry so many new grads are not happy at their jobs. Just wanted to let people know that you can find that dream job and be happy. There are good companies to work for.

Congrats! I just got a job offer too from LTC. Currently going through the background. How did you manage to get 3 months orientation? They offered 3-5 weeks. I got a question since you are working LTC. Do you have a RN supervisor on the floor? If so, what do they do most of the time? Thanks!

I am a 50 year old who had a mid life crisis and decided to change careers late in life. I graduated last December and started my first nursing job in March.

My ambition was to work ER, and I absolutely hated med/surg in school.

My first job opportunity turned out to be med/surg and needing the job, I took it, knowing I was going to be miserable. I'm six months into it, and right now, I can't imagine doing anything else. While hectic and frustrating at times, I absolutely LOVE my job and have to say that I work with one of the best groups of people I have ever worked with.

I tell everyone coming out, be open minded, you never know, that job you think you will hate just might be that dream job you never imagined.
